My temp on my Irish stout climbed up to over 170 for around 3-5 mins. When I realized this I took it off heat and it stayed around 170 or lower for the rest of the boil. Directions said 150-170. Will this batch be funky?
 
I'm not sure what you're asking. Are you talking about the steeping of your specialty grains at 150˚-170˚F? I'm getting confused with the choice of words. You said "rest of the boil". You don't boil specialty grains, and no boiling occurs at 170˚F at sea level.
 
If you were mashing grain, you possibly denatured the enzymes preventing conversion. If you were steeping specialty grains, you possibly extracted more tannins than wanted.
 
Poor choice of words on my part...I meant steeping the specialty grains.
 
If you steeped them that high I'm not to sure how bad it could be, I did the exact same thing with the temp even a little higher and my stout seems to be okay. I don't see a point in worrying about it since It's already happened, just sit back and see what happens.

The portion of the process where you keep the temperature 150-170 is for steeping the grains (approx 30mins). You need to bring the wort to a full 212F boil after removing the grain bag...usually for 1hr for proper hop utilization. Possibly you misunderstood the recipe?
 
I would think that missing a steeping temperature would take either a very big miss or a longer time to make much of a difference.

When I was steeping my grains I would put them in when the water was hot while heating. I did 20 minutes or 170° max. I almost always had the time and temperature come together very closely.
 
I wouldn't worry about it. When I was new at this and still brewing with extract and specialty grains. I boiled them accidentally more than once. Guess what? No tannins or any off taste that I could detect. The ph has to be out of range as well. It's not just about temps. It's actually the combinations of both that cause tannin extraction.

Yeah I did the boil alright, I was just concerned about the temp I steeped the specialty grains. Had a buddy steep his at too high a temp and it came out off. So I was a little concerned. Thanks for all the info.

Could have been a multitude of other problems with his beer and/or process. You're fine.
 
I did add 3/4 lb of rolled oats to the recipe. Its my second brew and heard they add a nice feel to the beer.
 
I had the sherpas carry all of my brew gear. They still made it up quicker than me.
