Blue Beer!?

I have a friend that goes to Japan regularly and showed me this beer. I assume it gets the blue color from algae. Anyone every try it or think they can make an odd colored beer?

i doubt it is that color naturally. just because drift ice looks blue in large frozen chucks doesnt mean the thawed water is blue. i call shenanigans.

Spirulina is either a health food supplement made from bacteria, the bacteria themselves or a deep-water squid. Not familiar enough with Japanese tastes to know their preferences.

It says it's naturally colored in the ad copy. It's the very first word, in fact.

The blue most likely comes from the spirulina, not the water.

According to their "about" page the founder(s?) did some kind of beer R&D program at the Tokyo University of Agriculture.

It would have to be an extremely light yellow beer to keep the blue dye from turning green.

Talked to my wife, who is currently visiting family in Japan, via email. She said it's only available in Hokkaido, but she ordered a ryuhyo (the blue one) and a jaga (the pink one) for me online. Hopefully they'll deliver it to her before she has to fly back here.
