Hi guys,

I had a question about the black marks left on the bottom of my stainless steel brewpot from a propane cooker.

Is this bad for my brewpot?

Is there a good way to clean it off?

Should I be adjusting the flame a certain way to prevent it?

Only used the pot once and would like to use it many more times without damaging it.

I did get a square piece of metal from a BBQ with a angled edge on it to hang off the edge of my brew pot to keep the flames off my ball valve, but wasn't sure if I should put something between the flame and my pot of just let the flames hit it directly.

Thanks

adjust your flame,, black soot is from unburnt gas,, you can clean it off with Bar Keepers friend
how far away is your burner form the pot,, most recommend 4 in..

To get the least amount of soot, adjust the regulator to the flow you want then adjust the air damper on the burner until the flame is as blue as you can get it (some yellow at the tips of the flame is ok).

Is it better to leave the flame lowish and just take longer to get to a boil?

I started low for the steep stage, but then kicked up the flame til it was almost coming off the sides of the pot to get the boil going, and even then it took a bit of time to get going.

I have a 8gal SS brewpot and was boiling like 5 gallons.

Also, apply a thin layer of dish soap to the pot before use. If any soot does occur, it will clean off very easily. Be careful lifting the pot though, soap can make it slippery esp if it's a little wet.

cool might try that

lifting isn't too bad since I have handles and me and another person lift it.

last time I sat it on a brick in a plastic tub full of water and ice packs, took too long to cool so I think I'm gonna get a chiller instead.

If you just adjust the air dampener to get the proper air/gas mix, it will burn clean. Blue flames with little yellow tips is the goal.
