I'm currently using a 4 gallon brewpot to do partial boils for a 5 gallon batch, and transfer that to a carboy filled with 2 gallons of cold water (then top off as needed).

However, what I'd like to do is get a bigger brewpot (or kettle) so that I can do full 5 gallon boils. My concern, though, is that I'm in an apartment using an electric stove top (not the new flat/flush burners, but the older style of elevated coils).

Can I successfully bring 5 gallons of wort to a boil in like a 7.5 gallon pot on a stove like this (in a reasonable amount of time), or do I need to stick to partial boils until I have the ability to use a propane burner outdoors (not currently an option; the apartment complex doesn't allow it on their screened-in patios).

Thanks in advance for any feedback and/or advice!

I just got an 8 gallon MegaPot and also am on an electric stove, one of the old, crappy, cheap coil versions. I built a heatstick, which was very easy actually, to help with my boils. It wouldn't be able to do it otherwise.

With an old electric stove, you won't be able to get 5 gal. (really you need 6 with evap) to a boil. Adding a heatstick like Grem suggested will get you to a good boil. I'd suggest at least a 9 gal brewpot to do a 6 gal boil.

Thank you both for your advice and insight. I'll see what I can do about making a heatstick, and make sure to get at least a 9 gallon kettle.

Just a note from my experience. Be sure the stove is very clean everywhere as the bigger surface will reflect the heat down and you might end up with a blackened stove top.
