The 02 permeability of polycarbonate is a few times higher than that of hdpe.

The wife came home with a bottle identical to the Amazon link. She got it at a local department store, Fred Meyer . I immediately flipped it over to look at the recycling code. It was a 1 PETE. I picked up the 3gal version tonight for small batch brews.
 
I always look at the code of the big bottles at the bulk water stations at the front of Lowe's, Kroger, etc. Recently I've been noticing more and more #1 PETE bottles and fewer #7 bottles. So the equivalent to the bottle in the link may be available at your local supermarket, filled with water, for $14.
