Considering I'm a hardcore Bay Area beer geek and I've never had a Magnolia beer, I think a $3.7 million expansion was a pipe dream on his part.

I think one of the challenges was needing to change gears to keep up with beer drinkers when I came to that massive expansion. I could be wrong, but it will take more than WF carrying their 2L growlers of Kolsh to cover that $3 million+ expansion.

Smokestack has been a train wreck. You order barbecue in one line, and they have three beers on tap, and they always run out of the sides. Then the bar is on the other side, and has like one beer tender, but they're also doing cocktails. So you're paying in two different locations, and the beertenders arent super-helpful because they're crazy busy, and everything is by the imperial pint. Just a disaster. Like a bad cover version of Aptos st. Oh, and their brisket is like $30 per pound, and you order by weight, but they're not helpful in recommending weight, so you always get too little or too much (usually too little).

I do hope they can save the haight location. One of my favorite brunch spots, and their strong beers are good, especially their imperial stout.

Agreed on Smokestack - been twice, enjoyed the food but the experience itself was kind of lame.

If you are ever in that area again, visit Sutton Cellars. Just around the corner on 22nd and Illionois. Hours are only Thursday and Friday evenings, and Saturday and SUnday 12 - 5

Small, funky "winery". Carl makes some great wines, a decent cider, really good vermouth, and just bottled some grappa.

Haight Street Magnolia is great, good fried chicken on Thursdays.

Carl also has the largest stockpile of vintage gnarleywine I've ever seen.

Also serpentine across the st has way better food, good beer selection & a great cocktail program.

Hey guys, jacktse and I are planning on a TB/friends bottle share in San Jose on the 19th! jacktse talked to the guys at ISO and they're letting us use the outside area of their bar, as long as we buy at least one drink. I can probably make an actual thread with some specifics later, but putting this here first with the hope some of ya'll can make it out. Let me know if you are interested!

I'm in. Just a quick hop on the light rail for me (though if it goes to late, will need to Uber it back).

wait a second - there's a beer spot called ISO? ugh.

I have to drop my wife off at SFO on Tuesday late afternoon, was thinking of stopping at Cellarmaker for a growler fill and a beer on the way back, anyone interested in meeting up?

My track record on these is ******, but if I'm free early enough tomorrow, I will swing by. Look for the devilishly handsome guy with bulging biceps and a beer belly.

Just to be clear, Arbitrator looks like a slightly less '90s version of this:

Concerning the South Bay share:

ISO: Beers
75 E Santa Clara Street #120
San Jose, CA 95113
http://www.isobeers.com/

+ Buying a drink or buying a bottle that you would normally buy anyway for everyday drinking would probably go a long way for them to be enthusiastic about having us back
+ They will supply us with a glass and water probably, once again - tipping helps. Finding a nice place to do shares sounds like something worth investing in to me.
+ The nice thing about ISO is that the bartenders are beer fans so expect them to come hang out with us
+ ISO is not a restaurant and we can bring our own food. So if interested, we can order some pizza at some point

I'll be the guy with spikey white hair and gigantic biceps. Possible DMX blaring on a boombox behind me.

ISO is less than a block from Angelou's Mexican (sort of meh in my opinion - and what the hell is up with that orange sauce - but at least the burritos and tacos are acceptable), and just across the street from City Fish. Ike's Place is next door (no street crossing) and is open until 9, and sandwiches go well with bottle shares.

We'll be in decent shape for food. :)
