Deal-breaker. I can't keep my mouth shut when I see something that makes no sense -- like CA growler policies.

EDIT: or hell, a bartender who worked at Drake's, and now at Faction, defending breweries who don't fill outside growlers (both places do). I need a drink

EDIT 2: I'm in DC right now, almost bought a growler of Bourbon County at a liquor store. Could have filled it myself and everything. CA is far behind the curve and way too insistent to remain there.
I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm saying your stress might come from telling others that they're wrong.

I've always thought this. Hell go into any store in DC and find interesting good 6 pks. Good luck with that out here.

I have a buddy who trades away special FSW releases etc for essentially shelf beers in the midwest. It's unreal the disparity between shelf beers here (SNPA, Racer 5, etc...) to shelf beers on the east coast. Most gas stations in Ohio carry BA Siberian Night, Wulver, Founders/Bell's/Great Lakes 6pks.

The real issue is that California breweries distribute everywhere. Few distribute to California.

Just a midwesterner lurking, but sounds like some grass is greener thinking. CA is the cradle of modern beer. Your breweries are just so successful that they can distro everywhere and are common shelf staples across the US. We get lots of good stuff in the middle of the country, and we produce plenty of good beer, but the west coast is swimming in great local stuff.

I suppose you don't get much from outside the region, but I'm never bored when I visit stores in CA.

I am starting to see the issue as I try and send things out for BIF's. People have HAD every beer I think of as shelf beer here, it is like we have so little unique that is not being distributed elsewhere.

I didnt enter the can BIF as we have nothing to offer.

I am not complaining, despite what it seems, our distribution is awesome, it is only when I look to ship stuff out I struggle a bit.

Our only occasionally novel stuff are San Diego breweries that expand to NorCal as their first bigger move (see: Modern Times).

Some out of state breweries you can occasionally find on a shelf in the North (I think these breweries are all amazing):
Logsdon
Prairie
Anchorage
Perrenial
Crooked Stave
Jester King
Commons
Midnight Sun

We were getting Ale Apothecary for a little too.

I'll take mid west distro over Cali any day of the week. Most unique/interesting stuff in California is such a chore to even find. For Parabola I have to stalk Bevmo's and buy them online before then even hit the shelf. Same with BCBS, etc.... Last time I was in DC they had 2 yrs of BCBS sitting on the shelf and at the growler station.

Want a good porter 6 pk? It's black butte and that's about it. Brown ale, interesting amber, scotch ale? LOL

It's IPAs out the ass and that's about it. /BeerQQ

Last time is saw AA stuff on shelves was over a year ago, the last two times I was in portland I didn't see anything. Did you go to bend or find them in portland?

I've seen it both places, but usually in Bend. Bend has cases on shelves around town, and Paul doesn't exactly make that much beer.

It's too expensive for the market to handle up there - $25+ a bottle is steep!

AB InBev is hiring him? Or is buying Knee Deep?
The rumor is that AB InBev bought Knee Deep. The only things that are actually known are:

1. He no longer owns Knee Deep, so there is a new owner
2. He says he'll have a new project to announce

So potentially we have even more bottles of Knee Deep sitting on the shelves than we already do? Awesome.

Yeah, I agree a little bit with the "grass is greener" idea and the point that CA breweries are distributed elsewhere more than the other way around. But there were multiple times where I would have slain a man just to get my hands on some Founders Porter. I've heard it's coming out to CA this year...

Going to hit Cellarmaker after work (5:30-6 or so) to try the new stuff (blonde with apricot and mixed-fermentation saison) if anyone's in the area.
Buddy of mine and I are going to hit it up around the same time, thanks for the heads up on the releases.

I'm wearing a red flannel shirt, shouldn't be too hard to spot in that area I'd assume! /sarcasm

So, Bay Area peeps: I will be in Berkeley from Monday, July 20 to Wed, Aug 5. Will be staying with family/surrounded by family but will probably be able to make a couple of beer-related getaways. Will be relying on Bay Area public transport and possibly Uber - how does that work?

Can't bring any beers to a tasting since the wife is dead set on travelling with carry-on only - but would love to meet up for drinks at breweries/beer bars/dark alleys. Anyone interested, PM me and we'll get a convo going. Hope to tick some TBers IRL!
