So, last month I made a batch of Pumpkin Porter. This was my first attempt at making my own creation. It's all done, and it tastes great but, I can't taste any pumpkin at all.

This is what I know/did:

I know an ale would be more subtle and would let the pumpkin stand out more, but there's so many pumpkin ales out there, I wanted to try something a bit more original. I took a basic porter recipe, and reduced the amount of hops by 75% to avoid the hops overpowering the pumpkin.

I used 2lbs 12oz of libbys canned pumpkin. I spread it on a cookie sheet and baked it at a low temp for about half an hour to allow it to carmalize and then added to the boil.

I also added 1tsp of pumpkin spice to the last 15 min of the boil.

I found an article online that recommended these measurements and techniques for pumpkin.

Like I said, it's a really good porter, but I can only call it "Barely Sorta'" because every now and then you get a little hint of pumpkin.

Any suggestions? Did I not use enough? Or is there a process that draws more flavor out?

I can post the full recipe if you guys think something in my other ingredients may have caused the problem.

Thanks for any tips!

One more thing I thought of. After the boil I pretty much dumped everything into the fermenting bucket. I usually don't throw the extra sludge from the bottom of the pot in, but I thought this might give more time to absorb the pumpkin.

I am brand new to brewing so I don't have any first hand experience in this. And would like to hear from others. But a friend I know always puts his flavors in a secondary. Wither that be pumpkins, cherry, spices, etc...

I'm pretty new as well, just started this summer. I've made 4 batches so far, with the pumpkin being my first that didn't follow someone else's recipe word for word.
