hey all, i'm prepping this recipe, and would like an HBT "onceover" to make sure it looks good.

QBrew estimates:
OG: 1.051 FG: 1.015 ABV: 5.7% Bitter:36 Color: 10
which puts it in the ranges for the style...

my plan is to follow DeathBrewer's partial mash instructions on temps etc.
strike @ 162 - mash @ 150 - 45min
additional pot w/ sparge water @170 - "tea bag sparge"
combine wort. boil 60 min.
follow hops schedule.
cool to 80
transfer to fermentor
aerate - check temp
pitch US-05 at 75
Lid/Ferment 2weeks primary 1week secondary, bottle for 2 weeks.

anything anyone would change?

That seems like a lot of sugar. I don't use sugar at all in my APAs but if you're going to use it, I'd cut it to no more than about 10% of the total.

Style wise, you are perfect on everything except IBUs are a little low for a true APA. I'd bump up that 60 minute addition to 0.5 total, and you'll be right in the middle of the spectrum.

yooper: so, basically, i should up the ratio of grains to dme and/or dextrose?

TopherM: thanks! i'll do that.

You'll want less dextrose and more DME. You don't want your specialty grains or simple sugars going much past 20% or so of your total bill.

i brewed this last night.
mashed @ 155-158 for 60 mins.
sparged with 170.
60 min boil
changed my hops to
1/4 Cascade for 60
1/4 Willamette 30
1/4 Willamette 5.

OG of 1.050.
pitched 1/3 of a packet of US-05.
this morning it was bubbling like crazy nearly 3 inches of krausen on top.

can't wait to see how this one turns out. (except i'm going to have to wait.)

i also plan to harvest my yeast from this one.
