Holy thread bumping batman....

But it seems the bumper only has 7 posts...

But still, people complain if we tell them to use the search to find out if their aluminum pot is safe...and yet THIS new poster manages to find an ancient thread at the bottom of the HBT gaveyard...WOW..I salute you mr "limes in beer to keep out the bugs man"

I know were talking about corona..but you should be nominated for bud's "real men of genius" award...

:mug: :D

But I have actually heard that the Brewer's Best Mexican cerveza makes a good, if not better approximation of it...

Hey,

I'm curious, does anybody really have a good recipe to clone a carona/sol/pacifico/bohemia/etc. Does such a recipe actually exist. I mean they make them. So, obviously the recipe exists somewhere... And they sell quite a lot of them. so, obviously somebody, somewhere likes them.

But, as soon as I saw this thread title, I knew exactly where this thread was going. And that for every one serious reply there would be four to six "beer snob" replies stating what a bad beer it is. I'm sure it's mostly good natured fun. And I accept it as that.

But, I am curious... Somewhere, among all of the homebrewing experience and expertise that frequent this site, there has got to be someone who not only enjoys the occasional Mexican Lager w/ a lime wedge on a hot day, but has also taken the time to try and duplicate this very popular style.

Thanks,

You may now resume the Carona bashing...:fro:

Edit... While I was typing someone actually posted some recipes...

If you want the easy way out, get a regular "Mexican Pilsner" kit from Austin Homebrew Supply, leave the yeast out of the kit, and add a vial of California ale yeast instead. That was recommended to me here when I was wanting to create a Corona-esque brew.

It really worked like a champ. The resulting beverage was probably closer to a Landshark Lager (aka Corona, hold the skunk) but I really like it. I've got it on tap now in the kegerator and it's a great pool-side summer ale with a lime in it. I wish I could pitch my cell phone into the ocean, just like the commercials! Crisp, refreshing, and tangy. My conversion didn't work so well in the mini-mash kit, so I supplemented the primary with a pound of local honey. The honey fermented nicely and if there's any residual flavor left from it, it's extremely subtle.

Personally, when the mood strikes me, I still like a skunky, pungent Corona with a lime wedge squeezed into it. There's nothing wrong with that. It's no more odd than someone else loving a triple IPA or a barleywine or a stout. It's something with a bite and a twang and it tickles something that people want tickled. Personally, I try to appreciate what the recipe was trying to accomplish, even if it doesn't suit my particular taste.

Anyone else notice this thread is over 3 years old?
Fixed that for ya :D

And now that it's resurrected and people (props to them!) have actually given some helpful suggestions, I'll toss in that Papazian's NCJOHB also has a "Mexican lager" clone, which I assume is meant to approximate Corona (even he goes all EAC on it...)

WOW!!!
its funny cause maybe I did revive an old post... My bad... Even more so I thought the whole purpose of this forum was for people of all experiences to come and get support and the answers they needed to homebrewing. I'm sorry I dont have 13000 posts, but Who are we really kidding here??? oh yeah i "FORGOT" the more posts means your more "EXPERIENCED" right??? It seems that people have lost sight of the fact that not everyone is a beer snob. If you like corona or you like american pilsners thats fine in my book. If you don't thats also good... Different strokes for different folks.

You can keep your genius award.

I agree with you. I love this site, but the complete beer snobery really gets on my nerves. If people like Corona and that's what they want to brew, just help them out. This thread wouldn't be 4 pages long if the OP asked about brewing a nice hoppy IPA. Not everyone likes what you do.

If you like Corona, we don't want yo' dirty kind around. ;)

But seriously, go away. :D

I think the genius award was for actually using the search feature. You've got a bit of a step up on most new posters, who never try to search for anything and just simply post a new thread. So I don't think Revvy meant anything, in fact, he was more likely thanking you for using the search function.

Yeah, the beer snobbery does get a little old, but, it's just kinda the way it is around here. Anytime someone asks for a BMC clone, you get the same "pi$$ in a bottle and ferment it" responses. But, if you were to come on here and ask "how long do I need to _____________" or "how much __________ should I use", you're going to get a wealth of information and responses. Putting up with the banter about how poorly BMC tastes is just part of it. Don't take it personal.

so its not corona but here is medalla light cerveza from the book clone brews
4 oz crystal-10 crush and steep in .5 gal @150 for 20
2.75 lb extra light DME

IBU 13.5
SRM 2-2.5

hope this helps and good luck

Actually, using the simple Munton's or Coopers Mexican Cerveza Kits along with WLP940 which is just released, you can make a damn close clone.

So look at this crap this thread keeps being added to, even though the OP has not signed on in ages! Let keep helping this poor basterd out.

Make sure you use more distilled water than spring water to get a real clean profile. Let us know how this beer came out! I wanna know now! How close did this Corona Beer taste to the real thing.

*****hope he signs in by next year and answers me :(*******

Halarious this thread has 9,907 views with its original year in 2006. How could I not "click on it".

Relax rycov I know your tryin to declare your dominance over the internet I couldnt picture anything more worthwhile. :mug:

Just cause the OP is gone does not mean this thread isn't helping people. A buddy of mine, who happens to be mexican, asked me if I could brew a mexican style beer. I told him I dont know but let me see. Searching for, and finding this thread has been helpful.

my question, somewhat unrelated to making this beer, is why the hell did mexico ever start making lagers with as hot as it is there? Seems to me that drinking preferences are highly influenced by climate & what was practical to make given an areas climate prior to glorious refrigeration. Or are corona, tecate, dos equis, etc not actually lagers?

relax, have a home brew.

Yes I am keeping this thread going. I happen to like Corona! Gotta say the Munton's Mexican Cerveza kit with an upgrade to the yeast to WhiteLabs Mexican Lager yeast and a little indirect sunlight in the secondary makes for a near perfect clone actually I like it better than Corona or Sōl.

I believe it was due to an influx of German brewers...

What is your fermentation temp on that? This sounds like its right up my alley. id like to keep things as simple as possible, no need to over complicate a beer like this. I could see it being a great summer beer for out in the yard.....

relax, have a home brew.

I know there was a great deal of fun had at the expense of the original poster and Corona, but I am glad this thread was here. It helped me out. I have found that making lagers, particularly light lagers, is much harder then ales/pale ales. The challenge makes it fun. My beer has more of a corn taste and the Pils malt flavor comes through more then I was expecting it to. The color is more cream then yellow. I think that is from the corn. Perhaps if I had some sort of filter it might help? Overall, a good beer. Here is what I came up with:

Zaxsan... pic of the beer in a glass? How's it taste?

PS. After YEARS, I still come back to this thread for the first response to OP for a chuckle. Hope you're still patting yourself on the back, because it never gets old!

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the recipe for Corona to mix 1 can of Buttwiper, 1 can of Swiller, and 1 can of Soors and mix in 5 gals of water, add in 1 packet of dry yeast and ferment in full sunlight?:drunk:

had a good laugh at that.... got a buddy who pays $45 a 24 3 x a week for that crap.

I have been looking for something like this for a while, so thank you to those who actually contributed. For the beer snobs, lay off. We don't all want to drink an IPA that is so bitter we try to swallow our teeth. This is supposed to be a forum to support other homebrewing. For all you know you may have discouraged the OP from brewing, or worse contributing an amazing recipe he may have devised himself.

But again, thanks for the recipes.

pfgonzo - I just found this again and see you requested a photo! I will send it along later. I understand people do not like Corona, but from a homebrewers point of view it is a Premium American Lager (1C). It is listed right there with Heineken and Stella Artois as commercial examples in the 2008 BJCP style guide. Anyway, it was fun to brew. I am trying to brew every style in the guide, so I have knocked 1C off the list!

Don't forget the lime!

Sorry, I couldn't help but post in this thread. I read through it and can't believe the amount of times it died and came back to life. It was a cool read.
