Any DIY Whirlpool Paddles out there?

Looking for a cheap(er) alternative to the expensive stainless steel whirlpool paddles on the market. I'm not knocking them - I hear they work well - but I can't bring myself to spend $40-$60+ for a ss rod with fins welded on. I was considering picking up a $15 ss mash paddle and cut/bend the paddle part into blades and chuck it into my drill. Has anyone successfully done anything similar?

Would a 5 gallon paint stirrer on a drill get the job done?

I've looked at those too but the few I saw that are stainless steel are either too short or just as expensive as the other paddles
