Say you walk into a bar/pub and you're encouraged to write your favorite song lyric on the wall, what do you write? I'll start:

I'd trade all of my tomorrows for one single yesterday-Janis Joplin

I'd trade all of my tomorrows for one single yesterday-Janis Joplin

wow, she was one messed up broad.

Janis was a bit nuts, but Kris Kristopherson wrote "ME & Bobby Mcgee", the song that quote is from.

Here's one of my favorites: "He went down to dinner in his Sunday best... and he rubbed a pot roast all over his chest, excitable boy thay all said" - Warren Zevon

"I broke down in east St. Louis
Kansas City line
And I drunk up all of my money
That I borrow every time."
-Tom Waits, "Train Song"

A couple from James McMurtry

"I probably ought to quit my drinkin', but I don't believe I will" - Rachel's Song

The next one is from Ruby and Carlos. For so few words it stirs a lot of senses and emotions, Kinda like a William Carlos Williams poem.

The storm door didn't catch
It blew back hard
As she struck a match
But she cupped it just in time
Then she sent that ash tray flying

Oh I get drunk most every night
Seems like all we do is fight
The more I drink
The less I feel blue
Sometimes I feel like an awful fool
Spendin' my life on an old bar stool
And yes I guess they oughta name a drink after you

If this date were to be our last
I'd never set down this glass
It'd take all the booze in the world
To forget you
You've left my heart a vacant lot
I'll fill it with another shot
And yes I guess they oughta name a drink after you

Looks like I had my fill
Guess I better pay my bill
When I started out I only meant to have a few
Someone just said that you left town
I better get a double round
And yes I guess they oughta name a drink after you

~John Prine

"With my feet upon the ground I lose myself
between the sounds and open wide to suck it in,
I feel it move across my skin.
I'm reaching up and reaching out,
I'm reaching for the random or what ever will bewilder me.
And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been.
We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been."
Tool

or

"I want something good to die for
To make it beautiful to live.
I want a new mistake, lose is more than hesitate."
QOTSA

"I love this bar
It's my kind of place
Just walkin' through the front door
Puts a big smile on my face
It ain't too far, come as you are
Hmm, hmm, hmm I love this bar"
-Toby Keith

And then one day you find, ten years have got behind you, no one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.
Pink Floyd

"take this job and shove it
i ain't working here no more...."
johnny paycheck :mug:

I drink alone, Yeah; with nobody else
I drink alone, Yeah; with nobody else

cause you know when I drink alone
I prefer to be by myself

Geroge Thorogood :mug:

"Got myself a one-way ticket.... going the wrong way"

From the late great Bon Scott, in "Ride On" by AC/DC. I could post that entire song, but that lyric has always stood out for me. Good example of a tune that's just as good whether you're feeling down or up.

I don't want another drink
I only want that last one again
It gave me such a fine glow, smoky and slow
Now I should probably be homeward bound

Hurricane Party-McMurtry

Oh….Oh!
The doors swing in, the doors swing out
Where some pass in, and others pass out
Your Father, I fear, has his nose in the beer
Behind those swinging door-or-ors,
(Hic)
Behind those swinging doors.

Was it for this my life I sought?
Maybe so...maybe not.

Marshall/Anastasio

I think just about anything by Flogging Molly is a good drinking song, but this one always gives me a chuckle:

Well I fell into prison about a quarter till three
Where I found in my cell a glass waiting for me
So I filled what was empty and I pulled up a stool
But he stood in the corner, the old devil wouldn't move
He said, "You drink when you're lonely." No I drink when I want!
He said, "You'll never be sober." Sure. Why would I want that?
I only drink to be merry but unfortunately
I'm in the wrong prison cell and the wrong company

Song: The Wrong Company
Album: Within A Mile Of Home

"I could cry for all the time I've waisted, but it's a waist of time and tears. Regret is just a memory written on my brow and there's nothing I can do about it now" - Willie Nelson

Remember that foul evening, when you heard the banshees howl,
and lazy, drunken bastards singing 'Penny in the Bowl.'
They took you up to midnight mass and left you in the lurch,
so you put a button in the plate and spewed up in the church.

Shane McGowan - The Sickbed of Cuchulainn.

...Once in a while you get shown the light
in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

- R. Hunter/J. Garcia

Passion unabated can be readily conflated as belligerence - Bad religion

Or

I'd play golf all day with heads of state, if they brought beer wouldn't that be great! I want to be Vice President, Vote for me! - Joe Walsh

"Shadows crawl across the living room's length
and I held onto you with a desperate strength
with everything
everything in me

And I handed you a drink of the lovely little thing
on which our survival depends
people say friends don't destroy one another
what do they know about friends?"

...Gotta love John Darnielle. Super depressing lyrics that are surprisingly uplifting.
Eh...who am I to judge...I *LOVE* depressing lyrics. Elliott Smith's "Rose Parade:"

"The Trumpet has obviously been drinking,
'cause he's f*cking up even the simplest lines.
They say it's a sight that's it's a sight that's quite worth seeing,
it's just that everyone's interest is stronger than mine.
When they clean the streets I'll be the only sh*t that's left behind"

:ban: It's a toss up :)

There's a million, but for now:

All I own is this old suitcase that I hide down by the tracks,
It holds a picture of my mom and dad with a letter that says please some day come back.
My ex girlffriend's worn out necklace and a book that I never read.
A church key and some bottle caps and a tiny bag of seeds.
- Mickey and the Motorcars

"Me and my brother's old lady went out and got stinkin'
She solved her curiosity about me by the railroad tracks
She said I reminded her of him before he started drinkin'
and banging the babysitter every time she turned her back!"

~DBT

Our Father who art in ?
Hallowed by thy glass
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done
On Earth as it is in the lounges
Give us this day our daily splash
Forgive us our hangovers
As we forgive all those who continue to hangover against us
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver from evil and someone you must all ride home

Because the piano has been drinking
And he's your friend not mine
Because the piano has been drinking
And he's not my responsibility

T. Waits

here's another:

in heaven, there is no beer
that's why we drink it here
and when i die and go to heaven
all my freinds will be drinking all my beer :mug:

I like beer. it makes me a jolly good fellow
I like beer. it helps me unwind and sometimes it makes me feel mellow (makes him feel mellow)
Whiskey's too rough, champagne costs too much, vodka puts my mouth in gear
This little refrain should help me explain as a matter of fact i like beer
(he likes beer)

-Tom T. Hall

I wish I was a trapper
I would give thousand pelts
To sleep with Pocahontas
And find out how she felt

-Neil Young

Our lager,
Which art in barrels,
Hallowed be thy drink.
Thy will be drunk, (I will be drunk),
At home as it is in the tavern.
Give us this day our foamy head,
And forgive us our spillage,
As we forgive those who spill against
us.
And lead us not to incarceration,
But deliver us from hangovers.
For thine is the beer, the bitter, and
the lager.

Barmen

One day this feller from Washington come by
And he spied us and he turned white as a sheet
And he dug and he burned
And he burned and he dug
And he killed all our cute little weeds
Then he drove away
We just smiled and waved
Sittin' there on that sack of seeds

-Jim Stafford

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who posted Tom Waits lyrics. Drinking and Tom Waits seem to just go hand in hand.
