I'd have to go with smell. Then again, Swmbo's aunt lost her sense of smell and that led to others finding a raw burger in her kitchen that was allowed to turn into a science experiment after a few months of rotting.

Thanks everyone for playing!

I figure most people in the general population would say taste or smell, but with us being a bunch of beer geeks and foodies, I wondered how the results would differ here. Not much, apparently. I think those would be the easiest to live without, but meals would be very boring.

My family has a history of nearly every eye problem known to man, so blindness is a very distinct possibility for me. At least I have probably another 20-25 years before that starts heading south.

Missing seeing my daughters grow up wouldn't be worth all the beer and food in the world.

Well, I was close. Makes me feel a little better about the time I took to math out a guess.

Congrations @sompls!

I counted what I could see, multiplied by 3, then added ~25 for the gradual slope of the glass.

Worked out well.

Hey that's me! Awesome dude, thanks!
Wow, I never win :rockin:
My Friday just got way better!

Morning all.

I'd go with smell as mention, it impacts taste, but there has to be something that would still taste good even if you can't smell it.

congrats @sompls

thanks for the contest @mcbaumannerb

happy birthday @[Gavin C]

I don't know how people could give up taste. I don't think I could live with out taste. Food, beer, sweets.... I'd off myself if I lost taste I think

Yeah, we've noticed that you like to eat. ;)

Playing ruff is dang'rous with horsedags.

Horsedag appears to be part cat

Congrats to @Sompls and sympathy to @Qhrumph (who guessed 227).

I think Bru'n Water is a very useful tool. I use it but adjust the actual acid additions based on the measured mash pH of prior brews. The more you do the better the pool of data becomes, and you can get ever more accurate in hitting target mash pH. Picking your target is a whole other ball of wax.

Having said that, you're better off with no meter than a crappy one or a badly calibrated good one. Typically I find Bru'n water's predicted pH to be within 0.1 of actual mash pH so there is a decent argument to be made for using the software blind (Did just that on my last brew as my meter needs a new probe).

Good Morning all....coffee...

So not to run this into the ground, but one would figure there could be a huge database developed for Bru'n water profiles especially those that use RO water as the source. Yooper and, I'm sure, other more "professional" home brewers have honed in mineral profiles for all different styles. I'm just starting off with yellow/dry and dark/malty. Basically only using gypsum and calcium chloride for additions. I use about 1/10th the lactic acid as the other spreadsheet needed to achieve the 'stated' pH (not actual), and I'm seeing about a 10-15% efficiency bump indicating a real change.

Bi-carbonate is talked about a lot to maintain proper pH. It appears pickling lime is a better choice then gypsum. I told my wife, I was going to lay low on brewing for a while, but this whole other subject is driving me nuts and is clearly a vital part of making the 'perfect' beer. Isn't that what were doing...trying to achieve the perfect beer...for our own palate anyway? :mug:

I demand a recount on those jelly beans! At least it wasn't a new member with only one post ;)

Thanks for the contest mark, and congrats to sompls
