Nope, not a typo. It vortex five gallons of wort.

That sounds incredible. I'm not able to open a ton of beer related sites on my work computer. I'll have to check it out later at home.

5 gallon starter. Sounds like my last brew. :p (DEM)

For your batch size and gravity I reckon you should get something industrial or go the other route and get two 5L flasks and make a dual stir plate.

Getting a bar to stir on a carboy could be a hassle but I guess if the plate's designed to do that then there are no worries. Industrial's good.

They sell a two inch stir bar that supposedly works with that much liquid. I wouldnt use that size of starter often, but when i need it it would be handy. Plus you can program it to automatically shut off up to 48 hours out. Pretty neat piece of equipment!

Anyone here have a good German brotato salad recipe?

boy, nothing i love more than a two hour conference call to start the day ...

Who set a "conference call" on a Friday?

I never accept/agree to any conference call or meeting on a Friday. When some one asked why I told them all that happens is ruining part or all of my weekend.

My grandma does, and I've tried, but apparently I suck.

Potatoes
Onion
Bacon
Vinegar
Salt
Pepper

From memory, I think that's all that's in it. Maybe celery salt. Anyway, her recipe has literally zero volumes listed, looks like a grocery list. Crazy assed old German.

I was being brocastic...

We done with this yet?

I like to avoid this situation by calling everyone "you" I'm always right bro.

I called this duffus of a vendor at work "junior", because for some reason "dip$hit" was "inappropriate". Anyway, I just kept it up...eventually all other technicians would call him junior. Human psychology is a great thing to F'k with!

I dunno, I have a lunch meeting today. Free lunch, likely at a place I can't afford, on a Friday? Done.

And we're in the first phase of a 125k sq. ft. Expansion. Getting fed for the next month, Bro Don Baker.

I may have another DIY stirplate project soon. I imagine they are using a a high rpm DC motor and PWM control. I think I'll make a web enabled one since we are in the connected age, I'll be using a microprocessor anyway.

I'll get on this after I finish my wireless mash thermometer.

I'm about to head off to meet my brother for lunch and beers. Should be a good lunch and an unproductive Friday afternoon.

Another option with a regular 5L flask is two steps of 4L 1.04 wort each to get you to ~1200 Billion cells for a 19G ~1.09 beer

All you need is the 5L flask a decent homemade plate with good strong vortex and plan the starter starting a week or so ahead of time.

One other option would be a non-stepped starter and do a drauflassen with the batch.

I'm not one to shy away from getting doodads and doohickeys. All for it in fact. I just don't think you'll benefit much from this plate too often. No wrong approach, just throwing the idea out there.

I'm all for him getting it... that way he can toss his old piece of trash in the box he'll be sending me soon here.

Marketing wonks. I'm just happy it wasn't schedule from 4-6 today.

My homemade stir plate had no problem keeping a solid vortex on my 5L flask. But then the evil cat knocked the flask over :( Haven't replaced it yet since I've not done a huge beer in a while...

mroing. back at work.

Welcome back to the land of the living!

More water - good thing about all my calls this morning is that it is already noon!

Glad to hear it mate. You have clean pants or did you need to wear a burlap sack to work today. Probably blend in pretty well in Oregon.

I already used brotato salad last Friday. Reported.

You could build one using a good quality fan, such as the Noctua fans. I have not tested it past the 2L flask that I have, but I imagine it would be fine with larger vessels.

I really dont know how often I would need (if ever) a starter over 5L, but the programmable part of this stirplate is what would make it worth it to me. Since I now have to buy a new grain mill though, that purchase will be pushed back to a later date. I'll probably just make another one that cold hold a 5L flask and be content with that for awhile. Wanna send me some magnets? :D

HA! The one I use now will be in use on sour starters you fool! I'm not just giving up equipment here.

DAMN!

For all concerned parties, I found the mill I will be ordering. ;)

This is going to be a short work day. Very short. Woke up sick yesterday, kept feeling worse as the day progressed. Now, I'm full blown floccin sick. There goes the weekend.

Weren't you just sick. Feel better sicko.

Fins, this is a great brew, perfect lunch beer. :)

Fruity Brett, mellow funk, light on mouthfeel but not thin.

but why aren't your beers on Untappd? It's like I'm not really drinking them.

Has it been too long? Have we lost @theCADjockey ? Search party formed? I'm bored at work and almost out of coffee, so I'm in need of distraction.
