The local grocery store has 3 gal bottles for $8...Is it OK to use these for primary and secondary..?. Thanks
 
Look at the recycle code on the bottom. Better bottles are made from #1. Buckets are made from #2. Some 3 gallon bottles are #1. Others are #7 (other).

Opinions are all over the map, but nobody makes a product to ferment or store alcohol in #7. There are many debate threads if you want to see the heated arguments for/against using #7 fermenters. Buckets can be had for about that cost FWIW.
