I'm brewing today for the second time and I am pretty excited. I'm brewing Northern Brewers Irish Draught extract kit. I also got in a copper wort cooler so I can't wait to see how that works out. Wish me luck!

Just keep your notebook or whatever you use handy. It can help you stay focused till you get your process down in your mind.

I actually have a question concerning all of the beer that is created from brewing... I obviously want to share it with my friends, but then I have to look at cost as well... Do you charge at least a little to cover the cost of purchasing new ingredients or do you give it all away for free?

That is illegal. If a few dollars fell out their pocket on the way out the door oh well.
? do you have your temp under control yet. Maybe they can contribute to a ferm chamber fund.:D

My friends & family are scattered to the 4 winds,so I don't have that problem. But I will say this. Make sure they understand that you ARE NOT going to support their habit. A$$,gas,or grass,no free rides,as we used to say.

Good idea about the ferm. chamber, could definitely help out a lot. BTW, about 18 hours into fermenting and the red is going strong.

I've wondered what other homebrewers do about the money thing as well. Between the cost, (which I realize for some all grainers is pretty low) the time, and the equipment involved, it can get spendy. Do any of you have a donation jar or anything at your house for when friends are drinking your homebrew? Obviously, it's a hobby and we all brew because we enjoy it, but it costs money and it doesn't brew itself.

Nope.

But I have a friend who has a smoker and he doesn't have a donation jar either. I'm sure his pork and brisket is spendy, but he wouldn't invite me if he didn't want to.

I have one friend who thinks homebrew is "free" but he comes over and enjoys it and doesn't drink all that much anyway.

I can make 10 gallons of beer for about $25-$40, depending on what I'm making. (Sometimes it's less). I would never ask anybody to contribute.

Yeah, that's a good point about the smoker. I figure if I was brewing all grain, I could easily get my batch costs between $10-$20. Which is substantially less than my cost per batch for extract. I just need to come up with the equipment. But, like I said before, it's a hobby and it's fun and that's why we do it! :mug:
