Ive started buying these $1.29 2 liter plastic bottles of apple juice, pouring yeast in there, and letting it ferment. The product is delicious, a decent strength, and cheap.

Im wondering if anybody else ever tried this? And am i missing out on much considering the real simplicity of what im doing?

The juice is just the aldi's house brand. And the yeast is just rapid rise standard red star yeast.

This is just very low tech experimentation, im just getting into fermentation. Im thinking of getting some special yeasts and stuff but i like the bottles already being sterile and cheap. Then im thinking ill try pourin a little apple juice off and ill try adding boiled sugar syrup next tine i make it, see how that turns out. tomorrow i might pour some sugar in one of my bottles n see how that turns out too.

Tried it with Meijer apple juice. I like dry ciders, but mine ended up tasting like piss. Wish I knew what you different...I got about 4 1/2 gallons more to drink :drunk:

For one thing, he's doing really small batches, so if it's horrible, he's only out $1.29!

Wasted money makes it taste worse.

Instead of adding sugar syrup, you might try adding frozen apple juice concentrate. Or any flavor of juice. You'll get extra sugar and some different flavor.

One other easy improvement is the yeast. Try an ale yeast. But only use a little bit - like 1/8 tsp or less in a small bottle.

What size bottles are these? Half gallon?

I shouldn't say improvement. I meant an easy change. Might not be better!

I second the "frozen concentrate". I regularly make hooch from about 12 cans of frozen concentrate for a 5 gal batch (I also add sugar). Turns out pretty good considering I'm right around 7 bucks for 5 gallons.

Try experimenting with different yeasts and different fermentation temperatures. Each of these changes will affect the flavor of the finished product.

Good luck.
