I need a 3.5 liter starter. Do you think I can fit it all in a 1 gallon jug or will I need to step up? And, since I have a stopper and airlock for it is there any reason why I wouldnt use them, or is aluminum foil sill preferred?

Well, 1 gallon is 3.8L, so I think you're pushing it. If you want to make a 3.5L starter, my advice would be to get a 5L container if you can.

I covered my last starter with foil and it turned out fine. Make sure you sanitize the foil first.

I got gifted one of these, but they're not that expensive...this thing is a monster, but has come in handy for me making bigger starters to split for when I do cider and cyser concurrently with the same yeast in the fall...

I just finished a 3.0 liter WLP833 starter in a gallon jug with a stir plate. The continuous stirring eliminates almost all foam and avoids a blowout. Above 3.0 liters it's getting to the narrower part of the jug that might reduce the surface for CO2/O2 transfer, but no more so than an Erlenmeyer flask, so it would probably be okay too.

If I needed a starter that big, I'd just make a mild gravity beer and pitch on the cake of the mild gravity beer.

If you have some fermcap or silicon antifoam, you can use some in the starter to keep it from krausening up. Works great if you're tight on space.

Ive done this before on starters and actual carboys when I was in between blow off tubes. Worked well for me

If you are in need of 1 gal jugs, I have two available that I do not use. If you want, we can set up a trade if interested. PM me if interest.

Whatever you end up using for the the container, I would stick with the foil or a foam stopper not a rubber stopper/airlock. You want to get lots of oxygen in there since you are trying to grow the yeast
