That legendary Banko was from 17’ and let us all rejoice in what an incredible coffee that was! Easily top 3 all time for me. In hindsight, I should have vac sealed & froze a whole 22lb box of it.

And yes, that 20% off is a crazy good deal. I ordered 10lbs but I was close to just grabbing 20. I have a feeling it’s gonna be pretty good. I can’t recall the last time I’ve heard be them so direct as to describe a coffee with RIPE BLUEBERRIES and as stingy as they’ve been with their scoring, I have full faith it will deliver. A 9.5 on complexity to boot! I may have just talked myself into ordering more... dear lord I truly am a junkie

Newb question here:

When describing the flavors of a particular bean, is one able to get those flavors no matter the brewing process (ie espresso or pressed)? Or is it dependent on the roast?

Both the roast and the brewing process. We have a LOT of variables to play with as home roasters. I was quite surprised this week with the Ethiopia Hambela Alaka I roasted Saturday. On Monday with the chemex i got a ton of floral aroma as I've had in the past with that coffee. Tuesday, I brewed it in the behmor at 198F and got very little of that. Wednesday in the behmor at 203F was somewhere in between, but still not as floral as the chemex.

Thanks to someone here ;) I did order a 22 pound box of the Banko and I'm down to the last 2 lbs. :(
So thanks to someone here I ordered 5 of the Ethiopian from SM along with some PNG, Sumatra and Brazilian.
Thanks @jammin !

^man i can't wait to hear what you think of that PNG you ordered! Thats the one unique/weird/unusual origin i really enjoy. When a PNG is on, the thick, syrupy body combined with the syrupy molasses sweetness & a kiss of hickory smoke is just delightful. Talk about a savory cup...

Just to expand on your question...you can create a wide range of tastes from any bean just from the roast. Before I started home roasting, I always bought coffee in dark roast. I automatically gravitated to that and I didn't know what I was missing out on. Dark roast is what seems to dominate the shelves at the grocery, and it is very popular at the chain coffee shops. But learning to try lighter roasts has been an eye-opener and I have enjoyed experimenting. Coffee doesn't have to taste like scorch. Pick any variety of bean, roast some dark, medium, and light and you will have 3 entirely different flavor profiles.

Just like home brewing, you can experiment all over the place.

Sucks there is no way I can afford that mill city roaster. Thanks for keeping an eye out. The same coffee roasted slowly to about 20 minutes sucked. Even my wife noticed. Yet the new batch finished at 1250 iirc is splendid. I thought it was to light at first, always do, but it was perfect. The slightest hint of green once in 5 pots. Could have been my imagination to. Starting to wonder about lower heat, better insulation. I assume the bullet and mill city roasters are really well insulated. Somewhere around 70 seconds after 1c has been a good spot.

@applescrap - your commitment to quality is >>> than any equipment upgrade. You also have a firm grasp on the principle of “garbage in = garbage out”. Starting with a carefully curated green stock is something equipment or skill can’t make up for. The HG/BM is a very capable kit:rock:

Well that sale on Ethiopians couldn't have been timed much better. I was thinking about purchasing some anyways, so to get 20% off gave me the kick in the pants I needed to just order it. I'm really looking forward to both those natural processed coffees.

When you buy coffee, you don't mess around with volume.

I tried to insert a picture of a rabbit going into a hole...you know. But I don't think the site liked it so it didn't upload properly. Take my word for it, it was clever, funny, and appropriate.

I'll usually buy 10+ lbs of a bean, roast 1 or 2 lbs to make sure I have a profile for it, then if all goes well I sell the other 8 or 9 lbs. I roast 16 oz at a time, sell 12ozs of it, and get to keep 1.5 to 2 oz of each batch for my own consumption.

So yeah, I buy a bunch and try to cycle through it in less than 4 months. And the UPS guys don't like me.

I got some natural process Burundi beans from Burman and roasted them 1 minute passed first crack. They are pretty good. Never heard of Burundi before but I like the coffee. It’s roasty and chocolate dominant and definitely an easy drinker with low acidity.

Burundi is the sht. All the flavors of African coffee with a little bit of body like you get in Central American coffees.

Had a mid year review today with my boss so I made him some Peru in the v60 before we met. The review went well. But he was on to me...

Do what you have to do to grease the skids. Good coffee helps. :) Hope the review goes well.

Hey making a guy a cup of coffee is a way better way to get a good review than the stuff that some people have to do hahaha

Meh, annual reviews are a bunch of hooey anyway. Mine is written weeks before the meeting, then approved by HR, blah, blah.

Like any meeting, coffee does make it easier to get through.

Well, I skipped over that part :bott:

In other news, I roasted some coffee from Flores (Indonesia). I got a 1lb sample with my roaster (I think that's how I got it) and it's been sitting on the shelf all this time. So I gave it a try and it roasted pretty well - normally I don't enjoy island coffee but I have to say this is fantastic. It has this vanilla-sweetness, a little barley, and a little strawberry. I might have to order some of this sometime; if you see some you all might find it worth a purchase.

This is my 5th pickup & my 2nd crew cab and that’s the only way to go if you ask me. I could never go back to a standard cab or even super for that matter. My company truck is a 2017 F-250 super cab & the difference is remarkable in cabin space.

One of the guys I work with has that same truck. It’s nice. I got a steal on a 2014 Platinum EcoBoost F150 a few years ago, and drive it almost everyday, in favor of the GT500. Love driving the truck. Get a winch, and an air horn, and thank me later.

So anybody get a chance to try that Hanghadi blueberry bean yet? Feeling like that scene in ren and stumpy history eraser button trying not to get too far ahead of my greens supply vs consumption ....

Not yet. My order won’t be here till Tuesday at the earliest. Plus I’m on the road all next week for work. So I won’t be roasting any till the 17th at the earliest or later that weekend.
Looks like it’s all sold out on SM’s website. Glad I grabbed 10lbs if it when I did.
