First time yeast starter from washed yeast question.

I'm looking to save some money while stepping up to 10 gallon all-grain batches. My washed yeast looks great (just like I would get in a vial), but I have never done a starter before. I would love any tips and was wondering if I can just put the DME/boiled & cooled water into the mason jars that...

    Question about low sidearms

My second-year newports are growing rapidly and have started to produce sidearms; The bines are over 8' and those arms at about 2' high are getting very long. Should I let these low gals grow or prune them? I already pruned some of the lower leaves to promote good airflow/prevent infestation at...

Rhizome from a second year plant.

I cut off a section of root that was headed toward the neighbor's yard & planted it, believing that cuttings from a year 2 wouldn't grow (..think I read that somewhere). Now that it has sprouted, can I hope for a normal, healthy plant, or will it be abomination?

    New England area growers

How are everyone's plants? My 2nd year newports are just starting to turn from purple to green and tiny leaves are opening up daily. The longest of the shoots are between 8-9". My first year cascade crowns are getting over the frost shock.

    Mint (anti-aphid)

Aphids suck. I hear that they are repelled by mint, so I started planting some around my trellis. Has anyone used this technique before? Will a few patches make a difference?

Okay to plant in cold temps?

Hello, I am getting some new crowns today from Great Lakes Hops and was wondering how to best handle planting them. It supposed to be cold the next 3 days here, but not below 35. Should I plant and cover, keep them in a temporary planter in the house and wait, or otherwise? Any advice is...

Trimming all of the first shoots- informal poll

I have heard the advantages of it for commercial growing (essentially a more controlled and consistent flavor) and wonder how many garden-growers do it. I sort of loved the "gamey" wild hop flavor of my first year batch. Please weigh in either way.

    Centennial opinions please

I currently grow (and love) Newport but have the opportunity to spread my garden by one strain. I have narrowed it to cascade and centennial and was hoping to get some reports from growers. I live in CT and am looking for good aroma/flavoring hops with citrus notes. How is the yield? Are there...

Where to start with all-grain brewing?

Hello, I have been using the hops growing forum on this site for over a year, and now that I am looking to make the change to all-grain, I realize that I have no clue where to start. Can anyone recommend any tutorials or specific items I'll need before I can begin (please bear my poverty in...

    Propagating from a live bine

I'm hoping to expand from 2-4 plants and have already buried a section of two bines in some vey well-prepped soil. It's two days later and the leaves that I left exposed in those buried sections are in great shape, which seems like a good sign. Does anyone have any advice on helping to ensure...

What to do with a bounty of weak first year hops?

I harvested recently (some pre-Irene and some post) and will get a smidge more, and my 2 first year plants have produced about 10-13 oz. dryweight of hops... that all smell VERY mild and have only some lupulin. I've vacuum bagged them and will let them age a few months, but I was planning on...

    Aging Aroma and Flavoring Hops?

I recently read that those of us who grow should age hops 2-3 months if we want to use them for anything aside from bittering hops. The rational was a bit too complex for me to boil down aside from saying that fresh hops won't add nearly as much flavor or aroma if used immediately after drying...

    Newport information, uses, ideas, impressions?

I have been growing two first year Newports and, to my surprise, they're both already over 15 feet tall, bushy and covered in burrs. I didn't think I'd get to harvest this year, but now find myself seeking information about uses, recipes, character, etc. I've been looking through old posts and...
