1st extract brew in a long time.

I did my first extract brew in 8 years...I honestly have forgotten how fast my brew day goes with extract. From start to cleanup in under 3 hours. Don't get me wrong, I love all grain but it was nice to start just before noon and be done by 2:15. I did an extract because I was out of base...

    Losing co2 - can't find the leak

I have been going crazy trying to find a leak in my keg system, and for some reason it keeps eluding me. 2 weeks ago I kegged my ale and put it on air to carb. I sprayed all connections with soap to check for a leak and did not find any. Within 1 - 2 days my newly filled 5lb tank was drained...

    New chest freezer

So swmbo gave me an early Christmas gift. She got me a chest freezer. Time to start lagering. Just need to get a controller and a good recipe....decisions, decisions.

    Stainless Steel Carboy for Primary?

I was Thinking about purchasing a 12 Gallon Stainless Steel Carboy from Deep Wood Brew Products. Does anyone have any experience with these? I am planning on doing 10 gallon batches in this. The price point is better than a conical, and space is a bit of an issue at the moment so this...

    DIY Tap Handles

So my father build a bar in his backyard last year and has wanted to upgrade. He wants to get a tap tower on the bar. I got him the tower to mount on the bar for Christmas and decided to try my hand at making tap handles for him. I was going to make the tap handles from my kids to him. They...

Darn it I just F@#!ed up

So I am brewing a pale ale and I hit all my target temps dead on while mashing and what do I do while batch sparging...I leave my ball valve open and loose I don't know ...somewhere between 1/2 gallon and a full gallon before I notice. My pre-boil efficiency is at 54%....darn it. Oh well.

    RANT - Overpriced Corny Kegs

Just wanted to start a bit of a rant here. I was in the market for some additional cornies this past weekend and went down to my LHBS. Now their prices have always been a bit high. Last time I bought my Cornies from them they were 45 a piece. There is another local guy I used that was...

    Fittings for Blichmann Ball Valve

So I used my new Blichmann for the first time 2 weeks ago. I attached a 1/2" brass barb to the ball valve to drain. I want to use a different setup and I was thinking about using SS camlock quick disconnects. I was thinking about these...

    My first outdoor brew day

2 weeks ago I brewed for the first time outdoors. I have been brewing indoors doing the split pot method. It generally takes me about 9 hours from start to cleanup. It took me quite a bit longer this time but it was mostly due to getting use to things. I think I should be able to get this...

    New Mash Paddle

I found this wooden paddle in a restaraunt supply store near me. I decided to customize it. I still need to drill / route some holes in the actual paddle but here are some pictures of the engraved handle. I did this free-hand with a dremel engraving bit and router attachment, and a ruler for...

    Drip Irrigation

So I decided to install a drip irrigation system for my hops. I used the Blue Stripe system purchased at Home Depot. I think I spent under $75 for the whole thing. And I have about $35 worth of material that I need to return. So probably under $50 total spent when all is said and done...

Kolsch - Skim Krausen? - Cold Crash?

So I brewed a Kolsch (my first one) this past weekend using WLP029. I have been fermenting at around 58 - 62 degrees. All is going well currently but I had some questions on fermenting/conditioning this beer. I have read that on a Kolsch you should skim the Krausen off the beer before...

    Kosch Recipe question

So I want to brew a Kolsch either this weekend or next. Most recipes I have seen call for a Pilsner base malt. I have seen a few that are not using the pilsner malt but a Pale or brewers malt. I have plenty of brewers left over and would like to use this if possible, but was not sure how this...

2011 Hops are starting to grow

So, my hops stared growing a couple of weeks back and I decided to use today to lay down my soil and also rig up a new pole system for my hops to grow up. Last year I had them tied up to the four corners of my gazeebo and just kept dropping them by letting some slack in the twine as they grew...

Fezziwig Clone - FG really low

So I tried my hand at an Old Fezziwig Clone. The below are the ingredients I used. So this batch finally finished fermenting but finished way low. The initial taste test is really good. I think this is going to be a great beer once it is finished aging and carbed. But I am wondering why I...

Malt Extract to All Grain Conversion with added ingredients

So a couple of years ago I brewed an extract recipe that used Muntons Dark Malt Extract (liquid). I want to replicate this in an all grain recipe but the problem is trying to figure out what ingredients and in what proportions are added to make the Dark LME. I thought I read on here somewhere...

    12v 1000mA Power Adapter for 12v .25 a fan?

OK, so I built a kegerator out of the Sanyo 4912. I am adding the PC fan to blow some cool air into the tower. The fan is rated at 12v .25a and the power adapter is 12v 1000mA. I am only hooking up the 1 fan. Will that be a problem? I know using a power adapter rated for 1000mA I should be...

    Any All Grain Startup kits?

A friend of mine really has an interest in starting to brew. He doesn't want to do extract and would like to go straight to AG. His wife wants to buy a kit for his birthday but doesn't want to piece it together if possible. There are plenty of starter kits out there for extract, but I haven't...

The who would you do list...

OK so I have been drinking a little and me and the wife had a conversation. I am sure you are all familiar with the "who you would do list". So we had a spin on it. We chose who we would do and then a person for our partner to do. My wife chose Orlando Bloom for herself. For me she...

Need to purchase new wort chiller

OK so I finally got my Blichmann 15 Gallon pot. My next purchases will be the burner and a new chiller. I currently have a 25' copper IC. This is a bit too small for the 15 Gallon pot so I want to upgrade. I have been looking at plate chillers but it seems (from other posts here) that there...
