    Lagering with fruit

Hello all, I have a 5 gallon “Kölsch” in primary that I was hoping to rack onto strawberries. I do plan on lagering this beer for two weeks and have heard conflicting theories on best practice for strawberry additions. My original plan was 2 weeks primary, 2 weeks on 8 lbs strawberries, 2...

    Assisting carbonation

Hey everyone, Bottled my wheat beer about 11 days ago. From what I understand, two weeks should be enough to carbonate. In a few days i plan on putting the bottles in the fridge for about two days. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips to ensuring optimum carbonation (i.e. shaking the...

    Metallic smell

Hey guys, Trying to use my new ballington brewpot I got online. As I begin boiling the water, I notice a metallic scent coming from inside the pot. Should I be worried? I've cleaned it several times and it still produces this smell. I know one step can smell kind of weird but I don't think...

    Frozen yeast?

Howdy guys, Forgive me if this sounds ridiculous, but I have some concerns with my wyeast. I needed to transport it out of town (4 hours) so I placed it in a small ice chest surrounded by a few zip lock bags of ice. I don't imagine that this would be enough to freeze the yeast, but as I was...

    Steep temp

Howdy guys, Getting back into brewing and this recipe calls for aromatic malt, and flaked oats to be steeped at 170 for 30 minutes. From what I remember, isn't that temp too high? I know its too high for mashing, but is 170 Acceptable for steeping? Thanks!

    Dumping bad beer

Howdy guys, I have a keg of beer (turned out bad) I brewed about ten months ago. I've been out of town since then and I just got back to it. I need to dump it to clean and sanitize the keg. Is it safer to dump in down the drain or out in the lawn? Thanks in advance!

    Oily mash runoff

Hey guys, brewing with a new ballington SS pot I got on eBay. Used star san but did not scrub vigorously. I threw it on the burner to heat up mash water, which I dumped in my mash tun. When I was running the mash off, I noticed a rainbowish film on the surface. I finished brewing and kegged it...

    grain oils

Howdy, I have a brew that just finished cold crashing. When it was brewed, I noticed a rainbow hue in the bubbles during mash runoff. I am pretty nervous that it could be chemicals or oils from the brand new stainless steel pot that I used. I rinsed it out with star san but didn't scrub prior...

    Possible toxicity

Howdy, just brewed in my brand new stainless steel pot i got on eBay. I rinsed it and even used a little star san before boil. When I started to runoff from mash, I noticed that there were bubbles on the surface that had a rainbow hue. I ended up boiling and brewing like normal but it's weighing...

    rain water

Ok guys, humor me. I've been toying with the notion to brew with rain water. Now, I know water profiles in rain can vary immensely based on location, but assuming you can boil out most impurities and test pH and composition of the water... Is it reasonable to consider brewing with it...

    copper wort chiller

Made a wort chiller out of copper from home depot. Kind of worried that it might have traces of other dangerous elements in it (according to other brew forums) it passed California prop 65 which is a serious safety regulation so I think its ok to dunk in my wort. Any thoughts? Also still gives...

    Too much yeast?

Howdy! Long story short, I ended up with three gallons of ipa wort after my very first battle with all grain lol. I made the intoxicated choice to pitch two vials of yeast (no starter) into the wort. I am now in full panic mode, wondering if this was a very bad choice. Alternatively, I am...

    Am i dreaming too big?

I dream of a keg with little yeast in it. One that won't leave me gassy for days. I dream of bottles that you can drink out of instead of pour 90% into a glass. Am I dreaming too big? Any pro tips?

    Creating a recipe

Howdy! New to the forum. Just wanting some advice on creating a unique recipe. I've got a few brews under my belt and I am tired of making brews that belong to others. Without asking for specifics, It would be really helpful to have a checklist of the basic ingredients that I can then select...
