    Oxidation Paranoia

just took a sample reading (been single-stage fermenting now for 12 days). The first time I put my autosiphon in to get some juice, I accidentally pulled out a bunch of trub. I poured it back into the carboy, then took a clearer sample and drank it. Gravity was perfect. My equipment was well...

Tell if beer is skunked, before bottling?

I’m a long-time all-grain brewer and am returning from a two year hiatus. My beer has been fermenting for almost two weeks and I just remembered the golden rule about not leaving it in sunlight....having left it on the floor by my glass back door the entire time!! The things we forget... Due...

    Adapting Mini Heineken Kegerator?

Would it be possible to adapt one of these for homebrew use? http://www.edgestar.com/EdgeStar-Deluxe-Mini-Kegerator-TBC50S-Beer-Cooler/TBC50S,default,pd.html If so, are there any reusable 5-gallon kegs out there? I'd love to make this work (for our office!), but want to keep costs down.

    Bottle Directly from Grainfather?

My thinking: - Bottling sugar in bottom of GF - Siphon from carboy into GF - Use pump to pump beer into bottles Would that work?

Does Grainfather have an integrated Fermentor?

Just wondering if I can ferment directly in the unit or if I will still need my carboys for pumping the wort into?

How do I get rid of this delicious hoppy goodness?

I've got a hoppy IPA that has been fermenting for three weeks. Now looking to bottle it. The problem is that I have about three inches of thick hop krausen on top. Sadly I don't have a fridge big enough to hold it to cold crash. Is there any way to get rid of it prior to bottling, without...

Why do all of my beers have a slight cardboard/mud taste?

I've probably done about 30 brews to date. Around 10 extract and 20 AG. I'm super-careful with my cleaning/sanitation and also on the old oxygen front. But still...every beer has that slight muddy/cardboard taste to it. I'm at a loss for how I'm causing it. Is this anything else folks...

Can I split batch over two days?

To cut a long story short, I can only boil around 3 gallons at once right now, as I'm in temp accommodation. I'm looking to do a 6gal all grain BIAB, but will need to split the boil over three batches to get the final six gallons. My plan was to do one tonight and two tomorrow - and then...

Use FastFerment for 2/3 gallon batches?

I generally brew in 2 or 3 gallon batches - would this work with the FastFerment? Just want to make sure the head space won't be a problem. Thanks!

Definition of "Dry Hop 3 Days"?

Making an all-grain recipe that has the hop additions listed and says "dry hop 3 days" Does that mean add it three days after I put it in the Fermentor, or for the last three days before I bottle? Any advice would be great! HW.

    Stuff floating on top? (pic)

I've been away for ten days...and this is supposed to be bottled tomorrow (it's been fermenting for three weeks). There's something, likely yeast, still floating on top. Is this a dead loss?

Will pouring from bottle to growler cause problems?

I've got 5 large bottles of beer. There's a party tomorrow and, for nothing more than vanity's sake, I'd like to arrive with a growler. Will pouring from bottle to growler cause the beer to either lose carbonation or oxidate?

    Lumpy Krausen on Top?

Brewing an American Pale Ale, and I've never had this happen before. Fermentation suddenly stopped after 24 hours, and the above formed on top. Does anyone know what it is? Will it be detriment to things, or how can it be got rid of? Thanks in advance!

Put 3 Gallon Batch in a 6 Gallon Carboy?

Doing my first 3 gallon brew today. I only have 6 gallon carboys on-hand. I don't rack to secondary - so is it possible to do an entire single-stage fermentation in a carboy that is double the size of the batch? Not sure if that huge head space will cause issues....

    Remove dried krausen from tubing

I've got a few lengths of tubing from blow-offs, each decorated with dry krausen. Is there any trick for removing this? Or, if I sanitize the inside, could I re-use them for future blow-offs? Just wondering if they can be "saved", before the hit the garbage!

Possible to do 3Gal BIAB in a 4Gal pot?

I usually do one all-grain batches but am planning my first 3 gallon; it will be brew in a bag. Is it possible to do this in a 4 Gal pot? The reason I ask is because I live in the middle of nowhere and the only place selling stainless steel stockpots has a 4 gallon for $29 and a 7.5 gallon...

Hops floating to top of krausen?

Did an extract brew yesterday and woke up today to find fermentation had started, but there is a big green layer on top of the krausen that happens to be the boiling and finishing hops. Is it normal for them to hang around on top of the krausen, or should I be shaking the carboy to...

    Leave out glucose extract?

I am brewing an extract kit, Canadian Light Beer, and as well as the specialty grains and malt extract, the kit comes with malt glucose extract. I have put this in my beers before and always find it makes them a tad too sweet for my liking. It's an aftertaste I could do without. Can I just...

Unibräu Mini - 3-5 Gallon Countertop Electric Brew System

Does anyone own one of these? http://brausupply.com/collections/brew-kits/products/small-batch-countertop-electric-brewery-biab-1 If so, any feedback to share? I'm strongly considering it but can't see enough information online to be 100% comfortable. Thanks, HW

    Make carbonated/sparkling red?

This week I will be bottling a red and wondering if I can add bottling sugar, as I do with my beer, to make a few bottles of sparkling red wine?
