Vitamin C - The Game Changer?

If you're using AA in the mash only, should you be concerned if you use a copper immersion chiller? Also, is everyone getting AA from homebrew shops or elsewhere? My LHBS doesn't carry it. Brewing this weekend and looking for something to come quick. I'm seeing the LD Carlson AA @ $32/lb on...

Water High in Sodium/Sulfate and Too Hard?

Are you suggesting the acid for pH adjustment? Any concern for taste with the high sodium/sulfate? I understood with both of them, together, at high levels, it can be very "minerally."

Water High in Sodium/Sulfate and Too Hard?

I've brewed with fairly hard water over the years with moderate levels of sodium and sulfate. I just moved to a new area and the water appears to be much harder to me, with high levels of sodium (74ppm) and sulfate (174ppm, converted)---see the attached image. In part this may work well with...

Kegerator Ice Forming On Back Wall

Acquired a kegerator second hand. The fridge seemed to work fine when I got it and it appeared in good condition. The person I got it from took good care of it. The actual fridge model is: Danby DAR125SLDD. I have a keg ready to tap and in preparation of moving it to the kegerator, I turned on...

Cold crash guardian with a lager

Do you have a hose coming out of the one-way valve that goes into water or sanitizer? With the bladder closed, you can at least see what kind of outgoing activity you have.

Cold crash guardian with a lager

I did a doppelbock with the CCG last year and the bladder filled pretty quickly once fermentation started going. It did take a couple days--I think I was at 48 also. If it's been more than a couple days, then definitely check the valve (especially if you took it apart in between batches). This...

Duotight For Perlick Shanks?? And EVABarrier length

I acquired a kegerator second hand and want to replace all the lines and fittings with duotight and EVABarrier. The tower has Perlick taps installed but the shanks are elbows (or gooseneck?)---see the attached image. From what I'm reading, duotight fittings won't fit these? Is this correct? I...

    Yeast Starter for big beer

I agree with this on big beers. I've had better results brewing a bigger beer, when the yeast came from a smaller beer---whether that was repitched directly on the cake or harvested and repitched with a starter. I tend to try and brew something similar prior though. For example, if brewing a...

    Pluto Gun Beer Leaked

Very nice! Are the duotights quick disconnect? And I should get EVA barrier lines too, yeah?

    Pluto Gun Beer Leaked

I wasn't using the duotight fittings. I was connecting the 3/16th beverage line directly onto the gun. Perhaps this is part of the reason---even though it's very snug? While I've never had a leak before, I don't think I've had the gun on for longer than a few weeks. In this case, it was on for...

    Pluto Gun Beer Leaked

By seal kit, are you referring to replacement o-rings and such?

    Pluto Gun Beer Leaked

It was not leaking when I found it. And it was laying flat on top of the keg. I have no children or pets, not that the latter opens doors (no velociraptors in my house). An in-line shutoff might be a good idea but shouldn't be necessary with a pluto gun. I may give that a shot.

    NEIPA recipe feedback

For what it's worth, I use Lupo, Cryo, etc. 1:1 for standard hops and don't reduce the usage. But I also like my IPAs angry. Also, I don't know if I would boil any Lupo, Cryo, etc. hops because it feels like you're losing a lot of it's intended purpose, unless it's under 10 or 15 minutes. So...

    Pluto Gun Beer Leaked

Have a doppelbock in my keg and I connected my pluto gun to it so I could dispense and sample over the course of time while the beer is lagering. I didn't do this until month 4. So from then until now, every week and a half or so, I'm pulling samples (it's been about a month and a half). The...

    Didn't Know I Needed a Two-Stage Fermentation.

A tripel needs to age due to the high alcohol content as @RM-MN stated. Two to three months of aging seems about right for this---ABV above 8 or 9%. Belgian beers in particular will age nicely. That being said, though, I wouldn't age an IPA at that high an ABV because hop aroma and flavor can...

Options to avoid a dry hop - increase whirlpool/flameout hops?

Yeah, I understood what your goal was. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the hops are still exposed to the environment in the fermenter and aren't "sealed" any longer. If you're putting a blow off tube for a few days I was thinking that some of the aroma of those hops will be pushed out along with...

Options to avoid a dry hop - increase whirlpool/flameout hops?

Just thinking that doing step two that early will lose a lot of hop aroma as air and co2 is pushed out, right? Especially in those first few days of vigorous fermentation. If you're going to go with the magnet method, would it be better to secure the hops after those first few days, but also...

Belgian Dark Strong Ale Westvleteren 12 Clone - Multiple Award Winner

+1 on 10 minutes. Nothing wrong with flame out either, so long as you adjust for your fermenter volume. I've also read of people distributing this out---some at the end of the boil and then some during primary so the yeast doesn't burn out. I'm not sure if that's something Westvleteren does or...

How do you keep your kegged IPA's fresh for extended time?

How much ascorbic acid are you using for your batch size? Do you mix it in your sugar solution? I imagine you're brewing 5 gallons with that amount of sugar.
