I'm preparing a starter using a glass vial of white labs American ale yeast. Should I bring this vial up to room temp prior to adding to starter? I was thinking I could immerse the vial in warm water at the temp of fermentation.

it is recommended to let it warm up. But you really can do whatever. Ive never shocked the yeast into not getting going int he starter

Bringing the yeast up to room temp, which your starter wort will be, is best to decrease lag time caused by temperature shock. Loosen the seal on the vial before you let the yeast warm. This will prevent the possibility of the yeast spraying out of the vial.
