OK question is , I have harvested two small sanitized mason jars worth of the yeast cake out of my last batch and covered with sanitized plastic wrap. they have been in the fridge for about a day and there is a small layer of beer on top of the yeast.

1. my question is did I do this right and how long will they last?
2. can I only use this yeast cake for a similar beer?
3. do I need to do anythign special to the yeast prior to pitching it into my next batch?

thanks, this is my first attempt an collecting any yeast.

Short answers:

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Starter

Slightly longer:

1. You could have washed the yeast, but this will work.
2. Usually you want to go from light to dark, small to big beers.
3. Make a starter a day or two prior just to make sure the yeast is good.

P.S. There are TONS of threads on this floating around so do a little search. Also, it's not that scary so try it out, it can save you $6 per batch.

hey thanks man, i did a little search and the info was overwelming and most didnt apply to what I was asking so i figured I would take the cheap way out sorry LOL.
