I'm using Wyeast for my first time, and I have a situation. I must have gotten too exuberant in smacking the pack and ended up blowing out the side seam. I'm making a 1200ml starter for it, its not going to be a big beer(1.050ish) but the question remains....did I shoot myself in the foot or will the yeast with starter be ok? Any thoughts?

Did you lose the yeast? Can you seal it? Did you go ahead and pitch it without letting it activate well?

I would make the starter right away. You don't really even have to activate the pack if you are making the starter. It is just a nutrient pack that energizes (and proofs) the yeast.

Since exploding the seam has exposed the yeast to contaminates, getting them working in the starter is important before something bad takes over. Keep everything as sanitary as you can.
