sorry guys, i just noticed you closed the order. i will get the check in the mail tomorrow.

No problem! Will keep an eye out for it. Thanks!

On another note, I can't wait to get all the hops, I hope they are all in stock and we don't have any issues because I have planned several brews based on the hope of my new inventory!

In brewing news for me, I decided to run my crush twice through my monster mill set at .035 and kicked the crap out of the 69% efficiency I was experiencing. I had thought perhaps it had something to do with the herms coil or something. I was about 10 points higher hitting in the low 80 %s. I don't want to go higher than mid to low 80s, but man I was very happy to see the jump in efficiency for the two batches I did. Brewed a chocolate stout and a belgian golden.

Hope you guys started clearing out some hops this weekend as well haha!

I was up at the lake house this weekend and my hops have broken ground (things are a little slower up there). The last 2 years the bugs have murdered the hop leaves and I need to step up my attack this year, can you guys recommend any insecticides or procedures?

if you want to try organic you can try diatomaceous earth. You will have better luck with this when it is dryer as opposed to humid out. Non organic, Sevin in the dust form will kick the crap out of just about anything.

You may want to use sevin first then switch to d-earth if you already have a major outbreak.

My hops are about 3 feet high, like 15-20 bines per rhizome! I am glad I have two chinook plants, since I wasn't able to buy any chinook through the group by :D

Yeah my hops are going nuts this year. Most of my plants are at about 6ft tall, and a few are already at about 10 ft.

I have wanted to plant hops the last couple years but my fiancé strictly forbids it because of our 3 dogs. I have been trying to find a place to grow a few plants and keep some bee boxes but haven't had any luck.

My dog doesn't like hops (thankfully). It is like he knows they aren't good for him. before I knew hops were bad for dogs I let my dog try some of my ipas, just by dipping my finger in it and letting him lick the beer off. He took one lick, walked away and started sneezing haha. Every since he avoids hops (and my ipas).

I am very interested in getting some bees at some point as well. I have been looking into mason bees, but my wife is allergic to bee stings so... while the mason bees are a good alternative with low aggression, I think they generally get bullied by other bee/hornets/wasps. That will probably be something that I will only be able to take on if we are so fortunate to buy some property away from our house.

of course I say all that but man... I have too many "hobbies" as it is!

Yeah we have 2 yorkies and an Australian cattle dog. One of the yorkies eats anything and everything! I thought about putting a fence around them but the cattle dog leaps over a 6 ft fence to get to me when I'm out front. I know what you mean with having too many hobbies. I have been into saltwater reef aquariums for the better part of 10 years. I'm really surprised to see how many of the guys that I met doing that homebrew.

Time for a property "group buy"? Nevermind. :)

Is there an insecticide that is better at prevention? The rhizomes I planted a couple years back were tiny and haven't gotten strongly established because the leaves have gotten stripped and limited the energy. The issue I have is because it's at our summer place im not always there and the bugs sneak in when I'm away a few weeks.

sevin is an insecticide and if you put it on the leaves, etc (spray form or powder) it will stay on through a couple rains (spray) or so (powder will be off in one rain). Sounds like the best use for your situation would be a spray form of something and not the powder. The tough part about any insecticide/pesticide is that rain and time remove it, so in order to stay on top of it you have to spray on a schedule.

You might want to check the growing hops section of hte forum too

The key with any insecticide is to spray, and let dry for protection. Avoid spraying on especially humid days if possible, or windy of course. Try to do in in the early am or late evening to avoid heat extremes at the time of application.

One other thing I should mention about Sevin and many other contact type insecticides. They kill friendlies too (pollinators) such as bees, ladybugs etc. So use them as little as possible to get the desired affect.

I get aphids on my apple trees and spray them to help curb the pests. But that is because I get aphids, apple maggots and coddling moth. This got really bad because the previous owners didn't care for a couple mature trees on the property and let the apples fall and rot on the ground. This gave a boost to the baddies reproduction over the years. I plan on trying to introduce a bunch of labybugs to my mini orchard this year to combat the aphids and hopefully reduce the need to spray.

No problem twogunz. I have long debated the pros and cons of spray control and finally gave in (for now!) :) Good luck.

mparsons - Right now we have about 40ish apple trees and 3 pear trees. 5 are fully mature (4 apple) (1 pear) and the rest are in varying ages but still young (whips or feathered trees planted 3-4 years ago at most).

Some produce fruit, but only a little as they are smaller. The stuff I planted is about half old English varieties for hard cider (Kingston Black, Yarlington Mill, Frequin Rouge, Bulmers Norman, etc.) and the other half is american varieties for eating, fresh cider etc. Most of my trees are on a semidwarf M7 or similar rootstock for better anchoring in windy cuse while I also chose a few B9 full dwarfs and full standard trees.

I used an organic insecticide very infrequently last year but on one of my trips up found the bines completely bare. I think spraying is my only option or I find some more resilient varieties and possibly find some other locations.

Yeah I tried that organic stuff for my apple trees too... did not work. Sevin works. But I am careful in its application because I don't want to harm friendlies, I know, laughable that I want to protect bees, but that is how I am haha .

I have seen some pest and blight resistant hop varities out, but it is really hard to tell what you are buying with hops because the seller's aren't that educated on them unless you buy from like an agricultural place. They rarely call out the specific variety and often go by general name "Goldings",etc.

That is like calling an apple tree a semi dwarf. It is only so helpful given you have about 6 or so commonly used semidwarf rootstocks that range from ~40% -65% of a standard's size. Not to mention that each type of rootstock has characteristics like root mass (that help anchor a tree), collar rot susceptibility, blight resistance, cold hardiness and the list goes on. Many of these things are important considerations, including diseases resistance when you are setting up an orchard. Same goes for hops but on a lesser scale from what I can tell.

I know with the apple trees I have to try to spray them once every couple of weeks to get good results (or sooner pending rain).

I think I'll try and spray every 2-3 weeks and see if I can get some good growth this year. Otherwise I'll need to research other varietals-- I went with just what I knew and liked brewing with and none of the newer us breeds

I use Sevin on my hops to get through the japanese beetles, but have only ever sprayed them down once per season.

Just a reminder, there are a few people who have yet to send out deposits. I don't mean to be pushy, but please get your checks out asap. Not trying to be the bad guy, just making sure we stay on schedule =)

Butttt if you don't get your checks out by the end of the week, I will be submitting your email address to every porn email list I can find. And your phone number will be submitted a telemarker database =) .....Haha I'm just kidding. I'm not that big of an a-hole. Haha.

Thanks!

Check will be mailed out tomorrow or Wednesday - turns out I'm out of checks for the account with money in it, but have plenty of checks for the account that is low - so, I'm waiting for an interbank transfer to go through.

Thanks!

PM some of the guys in your area and see if you guys can work something out. In most cases people coordinate through PM or in the thread. Once you sort it all out you can post your name to join the group so twogunz knows who he can release grain to.

i.e. you have to let us know if someone is grabbing your grain for you or it won't get released.

Not a hard thing to do, just letting you know

I was planning on picking up my own order, I know I saw a spreadsheet for pick-ups, can't seem to find it again....HELP !

Forgot to mention, I got in a car accident about 30 seconds after I dropped my envelope in the mailbox. I stopped to drop it in the box about 2 blocks from my house, on my way home from work. I was pulling through the intersection about a half block from my house and BAM! This lady wasn't paying attention and t-boned me. No one was hurt, I am fine but I thought I would share this wish everyone.
