Can anyone give me their opinion batch sparging relating to number of steps. I'm debating doing 1 sparge for second runnings with a large volume vs 2 sparge runs with 2 equal lower volumes. Wondering about the effect on efficiency.

Both ways work.

I usually do 1 sparge if I'm doing a 5 gallon batch and a double sparge if I'm doing a 10-gallon batch (mainly because I can't fit all of the sparge in my MLT for a single sparge during a 10-gallon batch)

This is a very good read...

Bascially, if you're going to double batch sparge, make the two sparges as close to each other in volume as you can...
