Site Gauge Question

I am using a site gauge for the first time today. For a 5gal extract batch, is it better to start off with 5 gallons and top up during the boil? Or, is it better to anticipate the evaporation loss and put in 6 gallons and keep boiling till you hit the 5 gallon mark.

It's best to do a test run with just plain water to see what your boil off rate is. If you boil off .25 gallons in 15 minutes. Then you know your boil off is 1 gallon an hour and you can start out with the proper preboil amount.
