While playing around with a new digital refractometer, I decided to sample from the racking port of my conical and off the top -- behold the sample were different by .002-.004. I'm not saying I'm all that concerned about the difference of a FG of 1.015 versus 1.017, but what I found even more surprising was the TOP sample was the LOWER of the two SGs. The top sample was crystal clear and the racking port sample had some sediment. My expectations were the particulate matter in the bottom sample would increase the perceived SG of the liquid. Evidently a flawed hypothesis.
