I browsed through Jay Straight's article on the front page and remembered that I had collected a few gallons of extra 2nd runnings over a few batches. I thought I might create a Frankenbeer with them (still might use some) but since I'm brewing this weekend, I thought let's give making a real wort starter a go.
I had kept my extra wort in the freezer in 1/2 and 1 gallon jugs so I pulled a 1/2 gallon out. Since it was frozen, the first step was to defrost it in a hot water bath.
The gravity was a little light for a starter (prefer closer to 1.040)
But I can boil it down.
After a 15 minute boil it was time to cool it in an ice bath.
And the yeast is ready to go.
Starter in a growler with the stir plate and a pair of sanitized scissors to cut open the pouch.
It will sit on my DIY stir plate until Sunday when I will pitch half and save half.
Cheers.
