How efficient is it to siphon trub from primary fermenter after fermentation to a)salvage yeast to build starter b) get the beer off the cake (which doesnt really lead to off flavors for regular session brew, in my experiences). I ferment is 1/2 bbls doing 10 gallon batches and think that harvesting in this manner would work well rather than trying after filling kegs. What do you all think and do you have any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Yeast and trub will be jellylike at the bottom of the fermenter. Just rack the beer off first, throw in some boiled, chilled water, swirl it up, and pour or siphon out the yeast. That, or get a conical.
