Can you look up recipes based on the base malt used, or hops?

As far as I know the recipes here are categorized on BJCP style. Some folks make very interesting choices with ingredients and you'll see many different interpretations of certain styles with some wide tolerances regarding ingredient choices.

Not sure if you could but the search function will look for key words. It would only get you so far though... I don't think I've ever searched that way.

Yup, the search function will give you results on any given input, as long as it matches somewhere.
Best to first navigate to your main target recipe group, like 'Ales,' and search within.

Sadly, it's not a recipe database, so you'll get returns from any matching reply post too.

Putting a check mark in the "Display results as threads" box will help with the organization of the returns.
