I just received my amazing Christmas present of a pin lock corny keg! However, it has come with the standard lid for pin locks with the static relief valve. In a lot of videos I've watched on how to keg the guy purges the oxygen that's inside the keg with the pull tab. How important is this step? How can I do it with this type of valve?

The step is important. If you dont do that then you will have Oxygen in your keg which you dont want. I have something like this to purge. You just have to take off the CO2 line, put that on the poppet and purge all of the air out and repeat. Its a little annoying to keep switching back and forth but it works fine
