Seems like a way that some of us might be able to save some shipping fees, but probably pretty hit or miss.....interesting idea though...

which means everyone likes to waste fuel. higher weight = lower mpg.

This isn't a linear trend, especially at constant highway speeds. The added weight increases fuel consumption during acceleration, but increases the inertia at speed.
