I am interested in building a ferm chamber out of an old college mini fridge. I am looking for suggestions for an affordable temp controller that i can't trust to not burn my house down while I'm not home.

You don't really need the precision of a PID for a ferm chamber, as a thermostat controller is good enough. If you want to be able to heat as well as cool, you need a two stage controller.

Here is one prewired: http://www.etcsupply.com/ranco-etc2....html?osCsid=152966aaa307cb53cacd9a59a999115e

If you want to wire one yourself in a project box, here is an option: http://www.dwyer-inst.com/Product/Temperature/Switches/DigitalPanelMount/SeriesTSS2/Specs

There may be cheaper options on ebay and the like, also.
