is this a decent refractometer?

It should do fine. I use one that cost about that but only has brix and I love it.

I'd never buy a dual scale refractometer. The scales don't match up, so how accurate can it be? Which one is right? I'd only buy one that read in Brix.

could someone point me to the math to do the conversions, brix to sg?

I'm reading a bunch but still don't know if I should get a refractometer.... I've read that it's not accurate with fermenting wort, that alcohol will skew the results when done, & then pickeledpepper responded to a post in the cider forum that said something about being good with math: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f32/feeding-cider-404692/

Looks like I should just keep working with my hydrometer(s)... maybe pick up the refracto sometime when I have too much money.

A rough conversion from brix to specific gravity is to multiply the brix by 4 then add 1000 and then divide by 1000. For example, if brix = 16, then 16 x 4 = 64, add 1000 = 1064, then divide by 1000 = 1.064. Also, I calibrate my refractometer to my hydrometer by taking one or two comparison readings.

Refractometer are very handy for checking the sg at the start of boil without having to cool down the wort to approximately 70 before checking the sg.

I check the sg at the start of the boil to ensure that I'm at the correct gravity for the style of beer I am trying to make. If too low, I can add DME to increase the sg or if too high (rare) I can add water to dilute.

Hope this helps.
