Not a great video, and I guess not really an underground river, but a cave/tunnel thing. Anyway the divers filmed this little clip last year when they went down into the hole.

Having a yard sale. Made a hundred bucks so far. Think I'm going to start going to yard sales when I move to Hawaii. Great way to steal legally.

Happy Saturday late niters. Very cool pics above. BL, your swamp is cool. Florida is so cool.

I built a new PC this morning, finally got mostly everything working, all software re-installed, hardware mostly working, etc. Woot. Also went biking, got caught in one of our summer storms (which usually show up in the afternoon here).

Have a great weekend everyone.

For your late night soundtrack, Iron Horse covering Metalica's Unforgiven. The entire album Fade to Bluegrass is excellent. Iron Horse seems to cover everyone.

BobbiLynn - those blackberries look great. I've got a small row of raspberries in my yard that are just about done for the season, got a freezerful of berries from them. Wild blueberries are up and running in the sunny hilly areas now, and there are some good blackberry patches up in Central Mass. but they won't start producing until late July to August, and they aren't nearly as big as the ones you get but still mighty tasty. We're having a good berry season all around up here.

I found this video. This is the same sinkhole I showed pictures of. The exact same spot on our property as in some of my pics but video taken years ago. They call it black hole swallet because it goes to an underground river/tunnel thing.

Oh yeah? What exactly are we talking about? I'm looking to build a new system in a few months.

So, apparently my roof should produce about 180 gallons of water per inch of rainfall from the two downspouts I can put catch barrels under. Now I just need to figure out how much capacity in the catch barrels I need...

So, apparently figuring out how big of a collection tank you need is rather complicated. I think I'll just convert another trash can for the other rain barrel and see how that works. I'm just wanting to displace some garden irrigation water.

So, this is the night I can get drunk if I want to. I'm thinking about pouring some rum into my cider. Then again, maybe I'll just drink some rum neat. It's taking to long drinking cider, and I want to be asleep in a couple hours tops.

I posted this on my favorite country music thread. Lot of good music there. Re-posting it here cause this young Marine is spectacular and deserves all the recognition he can get.

For your enjoyment...

I really like this young guy. He was raised in a coal mining community, has served his country as a Marine, and is about as true blue American as it gets. He wrote this song from his heart, from his life.

Cheers! Jimmy Rose! :mug:

You know, I don't really like country. It might be the drink, but I liked that. Thanks Dan. It's nice to hear something sung from the heart.

Different world here in the SW.

Some towns that rely solely on groundwater often have wells that are 500+ feet deep.

Ironically, water is still cheap. It is just rare here.

Wow, that is crazy. So why is your avatar Mn Twins. You from here?

My dad is from western Wisconsin, just across the river from the Twin Cities. I grew up a Twins fan. Kirby Puckett was great (though he turned out to be an ******* later in life).

They're still my favorite team, mainly since Arizona didn't have a team until I was older.

Here Farmers are only getting about 20% of their allotment of water, despite still having to pay for their full allotment. Water is a huge mess here.

You can't even drink the water where Dan lives, unless you want to smell like rotten eggs. ;-)

That's why we don't do them anymore. You have people with an attitude like you owe it to give your stuff away. Now I understand the pressure of getting rid of so much so quickly makes it hard, but I prefer to sell on Craigslist and tell the low-ballers to go pound salt!

Wife made me swear I wouldn't go to yard sales anymore. Turns out I have enough of my own junk that I need to get rid of without thinking about buying someone else's junk. I also tried to use the "Pennies on the Dollar" gambit.

Ha ha, Snaps! That is very true. When I moved into this place a Culligan or some other water treatment outfit stopped by and tried to talk me into buying a whole house water filtration system. I said no and regret it. Probably would have paid itself off in the bottled water I've bought over the years. The scary thing is, either Hanford water has gotten better and doesn't smell anymore or I've just gotten used to it. I still don't drink the stuff. The sulfur, rotten egg smell dissipates over time. My neighbor has always drank the water here. He fills a gallon jug each night and puts it in the fridge and by morning the sulfur smell is gone. I brewed with the tap water here a couple times and have to admit the beer turned out fine. If anything good to be said about our water is it is extremely soft. Then again that's just a matter of opinion.

Yesterday I sold a Husky 3,000 psi, 2.5 gpm pressure washer with Honda quickstart motor. The thing starts on the first pull every time no matter how long it's been sitting. I wanted $250 for it and $20 for the 15" surface cleaner. (>$500 new) Posted on CL, no hits. So I dropped the price to $165
I've had it three years, maybe 20 hours of use out of it. The thing is in pristine condition and all the spray nozzles it came with were still there and everything worked as well as the day I bought it.

Some 18-20 year old kid stopped by and asked how much? I told him 165 for the PW and 20 for the surface cleaner. He said his uncle has been looking for one and he would let his uncle know about it. Couple hours later the kid and his uncle show up. His uncle was a big dude but didn't speak, except for one to one eye communication, body gestures to his nephew.

They wanted to know if it worked and I said of course it does, works really well! They wanted to see it work. No problem. I hooked up the water hose and fired it up (started on the first pull of course) then I proceeded to clean the front of my house until it sputtered and died... ooops ran out of gas.

The kid figured that out and I opened the gas tank, bone dry. Next comes the haggling, remember, his uncle never spoke. How much do you want, what's your bottom line? I said 165. Will you take 160? For the love of all that is right! I'm giving this thing away at 165 so no not 160. In my head I was thinking screw you you stingy arse bastigde, I'll just leave this for the renters who I know will appreciate it and put it to good use maintaining the place.

MY neighbor ended up buying it at the price I asked. He said thank you, Dan very much I realize this is a good deal.

In the end? Somebody got a great deal on a very nice pressure washer and surface cleaner and I got one more thing moved out of this house that I can't take with me.

Wife made me swear I wouldn't go to yard sales anymore. Turns out I have enough of my own junk that I need to get rid of without thinking about buying someone else's junk. I also tried to use the "Pennies on the Dollar" gambit.

I'll be starting over in Hawaii. Most all my junk will be left here and sold for pennies on the dollar. I'm going to check out yard/garage sales.

CHEESE Goodness!!!

Last night I sampled some of the cheese I made back in February. A farmhouse cheddar that I seasoned with a smoky spicy seasoning. How was it you ask? Cheddar y, smoky, red pepper flake spicy. Overall flavor was perfect.. But, there's a but. I must have lost to much of the fat from the curds. Not sure what I did wrong. Maybe pressed to heavy initially or did something wrong during the cooking process. The cheese came out just a little bit dry. Not overly dry, yes overly dry.

But I'll tell you what. Some of the best cheese I've ever tasted and I know it will just get better with practice!

Sound familiar? :mug:

Stand your ground on price, especially with folks from Craigslist. Their favorite one is to come to check out your merchandise, agree to buy it, but oh noes!...they are $20 short in the amount of cash required to buy it. Then they look at you with faux puppy-dog eyes waiting for you to say "close enough". Eff that! - stare them right back in the eye and say with a big smile "No problem! Go to the bank and get the rest of the money - if this isn't sold by the time you get back you can still buy it".

Having said that, when I moved into my current house my wife and I (mostly my wife) had a lot of cheap household crap from when we were dorm and apartment living. It was all fine and useable, but frankly not worth the effort of putting a price tag on it, and certainly not worth the haggling issues. Coffee makers, cheap toaster oven, etc.. A lot of local college kids made out with a lot of cheap household necessities and I didn't have to pack it, move it, or argue about it. It's nice having the space back.

I had an expensive mantle clock that was given to me by an uncle when I got married; nice German-made clock, but I don't have a mantle and the thing chimed and dinged and ticked and was rather irritating. A guy from the local VFW saw it on Craigslist and asked if I would be willing to donate it for a charity auction. I checked him out (he was legit, really in VFW running a charity auction) and so I went ahead and donated it. They got $400 for Wounded Warrior for it, and they sent me a letter documenting my donation and the value for tax purposes. Worked out pretty nicely all in all. I figured that it was a gift and cost me nothing, but was able to move it and do some good with it at the same time.

Nice post TC. Really nice. Wish I would have read the first paragraph before I sold some Corny kegs. Advertised on CL and the price was very clear. $40 each. Very reasonable. Guy shows up offers me $30 each.. What??? I very clearly said 40 each, so 120 for all. Well he says I only brought 110.. What? You can't read or just plan on me being a fool? I ended up selling for 110. I should have asked 60 a peice and then let them haggle me down to 40.

I don't want to be that guy that takes advantage of somebody. I truly hope if I ever buy something off CL or a yardsale I will have the integrity and fortitude to not rip a person off their asking price as long as it is reasonable. Reasonable? I guess that is not always clear. But I do know if even when I get to Hawaii some dude offers Corny kegs for $50 each, I wouldn't try to weasel him down. They are expensive and bring on shipping cost even more. I understand that.

You get all sorts of people. I've had people actually complain that I left the <free stuff> on the porch instead of by the mailbox, making them walk 30 ft from their car to pick up their stuff. My response? I take the item out of their hands and thank them for playing, and then tell them to get off my lawn. I actually had to call the police on one bat-**** crazy lady who did this. Some people really just love to whine and complain. If you handed them a free vanilla ice cream cone they'd complain that it isn't chocolate.

On the other side, some of the folks stop by and are extremely grateful. One guy came by for some board games (new) for his kids, and we got to talking about my yard and the stuff I was planning to do. He was a landscaper and was looking for wall stones and gravel, and it so happened that I was trying to get rid of a stone wall and had a pile of old gravel on the side of the house taking up space (dumped there by a previous owner of the house). He not only took all of the stones and gravel and cleaned up the yard, he graded out a part of the backyard and took a couple loads of old concrete patio to the local asphalt plant, for free. I don't know who got the better deal, but we both left pretty happy. There are still good people out there.

Illegitimi non carborundum!

So, today I sold my bed and frame. I knew there would be crap under the bed.. Knew for sure I had a RV water hose stored under it, and a 50' extension cord. Under the bed was just a really handy place to store it one day, easy access. Yes, I'm weird.

But WOW! there was a ton of crap under it. Things I didn't realize would be under there. A bunch of hairpins, a couple of screwdrivers, an external hard drive, a few socks, and a bunch of other junk that accumulated under my bed over the years.

I'm moving out of this house near August 2oth because the renters move in the 25th. My daughter moves into her college apartment 8/10.
It's only 7/14 today so I have, what? 35 days before moving out but just sold my bed. Lucky for me the people I sold it to are just across the street. They gave me a twin mattress to use for the next month. I'll give it back to them the day before I depart. Quite honestly though, I'm pretty sure they'd be pretty happy if I just got rid of the mattress they no longer want.

"Stuff" is nice to have but when you want to get rid of it, no matter how nice it is.. if it's something you don't need and have to get rid of. You get rid of

ONe last thing and I'll get off this drunken rambling.. because I am a bit buzzed today. I let my guard down and had a few glasses of wine.

Ah crap, lost my train of thought. Not even sure where I was going other than this.

HBT, the people of this thread especially. Thank you for allowing me to ramble so many times.

Looks like they recently passed a couple laws to relax personal rain water harvesting.

http://m.ncsl.org/issues-research/env-res/rainwater-harvesting.aspx

Regardless, water Law is the West remains extremely complicated and often, archaic.
Yup, on both counts. I started seeing commercial rainwater collection barrels in homedepot around here last year.

I will admit the legal side of it is about as clear as mud, but the bottom line is that no one cares if you collect the run off from your roof. If you tried to dam a stream crossing your property, that would be a problem though.

...Ironically, water is still cheap. It is just rare here.
I've always found that odd. It's so dry, we are in a level two drought. My water bill is 25$.... Huh, ok. I don't use a lot of water, I'm in the middle of the city where distribution is relatively cheap, but still.

I like cheese. I should make another batch and cold smoke it. Maybe once I get project 2,372 done...

Since we're getting all highbrow here at HBT, here is some nice 19th century Japanese woodblock

Very chique. It reminds me vaguely of the ancient Egyptian porn.

Nice bike Dan.

The project for today, replacing the seat belts in my truck. I couldn't find direct replacements so I bought some generics. I ended up needing to cut a hole in the side panel of the truck so the reel mechanism can stick into the cab. The old one was behind a plastic panel, but the new one won't fit there. That actually turned out to be pretty easy. The hard part was installing the clip part for the belt. One of them goes pretty much in the middle of the driver side seat. It's got the section for the center as well. That meant pretty much taking the seat apart. All in all, about 4 1/2 hours for the project. When I saw how the female part of the belts was mounted I budgeted 6.

It's been a good day, I got my weekly shopping done too. Later today I'll need to take a look at the nectarine mead. Not sure what I'm going to do with it, I know I don't have enough bottles to bottle it right now.

LG. sounds as though you have a busy life. That's a good thing. Best wishes to you and your dreams Brother.

I just read this. I'm sitting here biting my fingernails trying not to post a snarky innuendo laden response...
