I'm having a hard time keeping my cordless drill chuck tightened onto my grain mill shaft, since the shaft is cylindrical with just one flat side. The shaft keeps slipping in the chuck. Is there an effective and cheap solution? I'd rather not spend $30+ on flexible coupling parts.

Maybe grind or file two more flats to match the drill chuck.
Some drills you can replace the chuck with a keyed one.
You can get a lot more bite cranking on the 'ole keyed chuck.

P.S. That shaft may be hardened too, keeping you from getting a good bite.

The best way is to use a drill with a key, but they don't have those much anymore. Second would be to get a pair of channel locks and tighten the chuck with those. Ether way it's not something you want to be taking on and off a lot. Once it's locked on keep it there. IMHO

use a drill with a actual Jacobs keyless chuck (dewalt, milwalkee, makita)
or a drill with a keyed chuck.
