So until my last brew I never really thought twice about how much priming sugar to use for bottling (I over carbonated my stout) and just used the recommended 4.5 oz that my LHBS suggests for every recipe. I am trying to avoid doing this again, but I am not quite sure as to how I should go about figuring it out.

Is there anyone out there who can show me the way? For what it's worth I am going to be bottling a brown ale, but if there were a previous thread or something similar that would help with showing how to determine appropriate carbonation it would be greatly appreciated.
