Hi,

I'm Doc from germany (as you can see in the title) I'm 28 y/o and I'm a homebrewer since almost a year now. Until today I brewed a few batches of traditional german beer, such as Helles, Bock and Weizen. I wanted to get my techniques right and therefore i chose beers i knew quite well. I'm registered in the german homebrewers forum and its great but there are some styles that are not greatly discussed, for that matter i found your forum. Other than that, the american homebrewing tradition is a bit oder than the german. (until the mid-eighties homebrewing was forbidden in germany) So i hope I can learn from all that experience.
Lastly I try to be a polite person, so I thought I introduce myself.

Hi Doc!

Glad you found us! To bad it costs to much to ship beer from there to here and vice versa!

Yes, there are lots of beer styles discussed in this forum. And you'll find lots of discussion about general process improvements, too. Welcome.

Hey Doc, where in Germany? My wife is from Hannover and we are most likely moving back there at some point. How accessible are homebrewing supplies? Do you think there would be enough customers for a homebrew shop in a city like Berlin or Potsdam?

Hi,

thanks for the warm welcome y'all :D

There are a few internetshops in Germany for Homebrewing supplies, personally I use 3 of them and i never had a problem of getting something. Sometimes it's hard to get your hands on some NC or CC kegs but I dont use them anyway.
Berlin is in fact a city for everyone with everything and i know for a fact, there is a "big" homebrewing comunity but I'm not aware of a store based shop over there, but dont take my word for it. I'm from around Frankfurt and for germany that's pretty far away.
What I can say for certain is, the homebrewing community in Germany is growing.

Hey Doc,

I'm down in Stuttgart. What sites do you generally use. So far the best one I have found is: hobbybrauerversand.de. I've noticed as well that the community is growing over here but it's still small and sometime difficult to find things. I was attempting an extract brew and could not find any Munich DME and the only replacement I could find besides Munich malt was a 4kg bottle of Munich LME. Anyway, glad to meet someone else in Germany on here.

Yes, I just used hobbybrauerversand for the first time. I got a 22l PET fermenter and the malts/extract for a Christmas Ale. I need to look through the other sites when I have more time.

Welcome aboard from New Orleans!
I'm pretty sure that no matter what style of beer you want to discuss here, there are at least several members who are familiar with it. I've been a beer snob since the 80s and they come up with stuff I've never even heard of. The amount of brewing information on this board is incredible and everyone plays nicely together about 90% of the time.

In 1997 I taught a Bavarian friend how to brew (we were co-workers at Hilti in Liechtenstein). Basic ingredients were actually available from store that sold microbrews in St. Gallen, CH.

We also found a small, probably semi-legal, distributor in Munich that was really just a Homebrewer that appeared to buy things in bulk and re-sell them from a storage unit by appointment only.

Equipment was almost impossible to find. We had to make most, import some from the UK and smuggled a bunch back in my luggage when returning from a visit to the US. I certainly made us be creative as many of the things I took for granted just were not available.

Welcome! Ask lots of questions.

Thanks for the warm welcome. Damn your story sounds shady and really interesting. Its really interesting to hear old storys from homebrewing veterans in germany.

It is not quite as shady as it sounds but it was interesting. The guy doing the sales out of a storage unit was mainly supplying his local homebrew club. We found out about him through that club which was the closest to us. My point being, find a club locally if you have not already and see if they do an equivalent of what clubs in large cities in the US do...group buys!

Out of curiosity, what major non-German styles are you looking at? I admit, I rarely brew anything from the area outside of a Dunkel Hefeweizen every now and then. My taste tends toward British malt-forward beers and their American interpretations.
