Hello everyone, great website! I just brewed up a first test batch yesterday but with this cold weather in Massachusetts will see how it comes out. Looking to build a fermentation box but had one question. As far as using a heat source inside, whats better adding a small 200w space heater or using one of the beer brew belts coiled up inside the fermentation box I build.

thanks in advance.

Welcome, from Minnesota!

I guess the answer to your question depends on how large a space you need to heat in your ferm chamber. If it's a small enclosure and you just want to maintain heat on a fermenter, the brew belt or Fermwrap would be plenty. You can also make a simple "light bulb in a gallon paint can" heater, and there are lots of DIY threads for that on HBT. I use the paint can, with a 25W incandescent bulb. It provides plenty of heat in my 5 cu ft. freezer ferm chamber.

Those ceramic infrared heaters used in reptile enclosures might be a viable option.

Welcome!
Boston and cape here too!
I use a ranco temp controller on the fermentation fridge and a seed germinating mat (like a heating pad ) both set at 68 and it holds a steady 68 very well for the primary. As soon as I start to cold crash, the heating mat gets unplugged.
Good luck!
Cheers!
