Heat stick question

I understand that I need to unplug my heat stick before removing it from the water, but does it need to cool down at all before removal as well? Is there any risk of damage? There were no instructions in the box it came in.

You can pull it out of liquid after about 20 seconds of being unpowered.

I usually have a towel close by that I can place it on. More for the mess than the heat.
