Thanks to everybody on here for all the help and advice. I brewed a red ale yesterday and didn't have many issues, except for the people I share a house with not understanding why I had the kitchen area blocked off. I almost had to throw a frying pan full of hamburger at the guy who decided he needed to cook while I was brewing, but I guess that's why I'm sharing a house, I couldn't kick him out of the kitchen)-:
I don't think his presence did much to my beer though, I put the pot outside in the snow to cool it down, it was 80 degrees within 20 minutes, I put the brew in the bucket, added the rest of the water and yeast, then stirred it all. The bucket is now in the back of the laundry room wrapped in a black garbage bag to keep light out, unfortunately no other room in the house was warm enough to hold it.
It was bubbling every 30 seconds or so this morning when I checked on it. Now I need to go pick up some bottles!
