Just syphoned my first ever batch out of the fermentation vessel and there was a pretty thick layer of brown jelly/sludge at the bottem.

Is that normal?
 
LOL. Yea most likely it is your beautiful yeast cake. It is normal man, maybe in the future you can harvest some for your next brew.
 
Let's see- you spend hours making them food and then give them a place to live that's perfectly suited to their idea of comfort. All they do is eat, poop, and fall asleep. I think the slave/master distinction is a bit blurry here...

Ive had this same thought about my cat...
