I'm using my kettle with a ball valve for the first time and I'm not sure what good whirlpooling will do after chilling if I have a ballvalve on the side of the kettle to drain into my fermenter...Will whirlpooling and sitting for 20 minutes really allow just wort and not sediment to be drained? I will still be draining through a colander and grain bag...

Whirlpooling will stop most of the gunk from getting into the fermenter. Just crack the ball valve and let the beer drain slowy. The first bit will be a little cloudy but will clear in no time. I wouldn't even worry about the straining.
