OK, Jarhead...you don't know a damned thing about me so listen up because I don't want to repeat myself...I've earned the right to be self-righteous, opinionated and judgemental!:rockin:

I just retired (in June) with 36 years, 9 months and a couple of days of Federal service to this country. I was Active Army in Artillery (I worked on the M102, M114, and M198 Towed, M109 and M110 Self-Propelled Howitzers) for 7 years (1972-1980 and no, I did not go to 'Nam).

I have been to every Army, fort, base, camp, station and US Kaserne in the US, Germany, Italy and Korea...many more than once and several MANY, MANY times. Unfortunately, none in SWA because I've been training my 4 replacements for the past 2 years.

I spent a minimum of 15 weeks (many more over 20 weeks) a year on the road supporting the soldiers.

Sure I was young once. I joined the Army at 17 when the draft was still on. Afterwards I spent almost 30 years as a Department of the Army Civilian. I was a GS-12 (equivilant rank of Major) from 1996 to retirement.

I know everything there is to know about every small arms the Army has. I worked in Direct Support as a Small Arms Repairer and Inspector for 5 years and supported them for another 20 plus.

I've worked and taught soldiers and civilians on every towed artillery piece up to the triple 7. But I have performed M777 modifications at Forts Lewis and Sill as well as Goose Creek.

My last job (6+ years), I was the Equipment Specialist for the Paladin, M109A6 155mm Self-Propelled Howitzer. I've been to Anniston Army Depot, AL at least a dozen times on the Paladin program, as well as modifying the 120mm Mortars. I also did this Germany and Korea while working the Paladin. I was responsible for all the technical actions for the howitzer to include provisioning, maintenance, writing and updating the TMs, applying modifications. Whenever soldiers or civilians had a problem in the field I was the person they would call. I went to Korean every year for the last 6 years to teach the Paladin Digital Fire Control System to civilians and mechanics.

The 9 years I spent in Germany were for our collective Uncle. While there I did two tours in Kosovo as an Armament Logistics Assitance Representative (LAR). I was NOT A CONTRACTOR!!!!. I supported all the weapons systems in theater, including the Kiowa and Apache 50 cal and rocket pods.

There's more, but why go one...this isn't a job interview. I know a person of my experience can't be made in 5, 10, or even 20 years. :rockin: Yes, I am well aware of worth to this country.

The funny thing is that if I ever wanted to return (back to work) I could go to almost any country in the world because our military weapons are there.
Here's something to wash down that humble pie...:mug::mug:
At Ease!! Semper Fidelis! ;)

Really?

Yes Really! He likes himself. I for one am happy for him. However, I see nothing that makes me eat some humble pie, but I'd like to try bacon pie.

Besides He's No Chesty!

:mug:

Oh I forgot to ask him about his medals, So tell us Mr Homebrew_99?

This should be good.

Frankfurtvr4 :

I'd agree with you if I was really caring about this argument. It's just something to do until I can get off work and drinks some beer. :mug:

Heavily agree with Jay on this one...It's all about passing time at work, what else are we supposed to do while on the clock?

Well, you could talk about what is really important here. Bacon. The GF made me some bacon chocolate chip cookies a few weeks back and the were the awesome sauce.

And to the younger people...Jagermeister is not a drink to be chugged at the bar. It's an after dinner drink that aids in digesting your meal.

It was Sidney Frank who decided to market Jagermeister to college students in the 80's. It was marketed as a ice cold shot.

I used to hate Jager, I still don't much care for it, but I have discovered that if you ignore all the prattling college kids who are pounding it in the form of Jager Bombs with Red Bull energy drink, that there is another, creative, way that makes it delicious!

Mix it with a good quality Root Beer -- I wish I brewed my own soda to that I could mix it with homebrew root beer, but instead a nice brand from the organic store will work for me -- then layer a shot of Jager on top of it. It replicates that very nice spicy, herbal taste that you used to get in old school Root Beer Barrel candies, before they reformulated them for these-a-days. (Or Horehound drops - my god I bet people don't even know what those are anymore. hb99 knows what i mean though. :) )

As to bacon -- My wife works at a software company -- she bought them a bottle of Baconnaise that now proudly lives in the community fridge. The programmers dig it, I hear.

Yeah, I usually can find them by going to either the local (mom and pop, not Home Depot) hardware store, or else the closest Farm Supply store.
Dang they are delicious though.
Like bacon.

Heck I still hold a grudge after they German's Bombed Pearl Harbor! :)

Nice thread, just as soon as you think you have a handle on it, it takes a 360° turn back to bacon:ban:

BTW, does anyone know what Jürgen Prochnow and the Chief Engineer were drinking at the bar(based on the glass shape)?

I am pretty sure it was not bacon so try again:cross:

OK, I'm back. We had a bad storm that knocked the electricity out for a day or so, and the AC unit is DOA.

Let's see...where do I start?

1. Frankfurtvr4 comment: Really?

In what way? Yes, everything I said is true. (And I agree, we may all be retarded...;))

2. brewagentjay comment: Medals...other than the 2 Good Conduct, National Defense and Kosovo medal (placed in grandsons casket), Expert Marksmanship badge nothing outstanding. Medals are nice, but usually don't tell the entire truth and require a commander submit a write-up for approval. My greatest rewards were all the "thanks" I received from the thousands of soldiers I've taught small arms and artillery to over the years.

I do have 2 binders of Certificates of Achievements and other awards, but I don't have an "I Love Me" wall with them plastered all over. At retirement I received a Flag box. The flag was flown over the White House. You are only eligible to get them after 35 years service. I also received a certificate from Barack O. for retirement. I also have 16 Commanders Coins, most notably, 2 are from 2 Star Generals, 1 from a Col, and 2 from a Lt. Col.

I apologize for putting a kink in your entertainment...see electricity out note above...I hope you got some work done.

OK, so what have you done to support this country? ;)

BargainMugs: Thanks for the Sidney Frank info...:mug:

MeatyPortion: +1 on those drinks. :drunk:

Chriso: Yes, I like them. We can still buy Horehound candy at Farm & Fleet. :rockin:

I think that covers everyone...oh, yeah, wasn't there a Marine in this discussion earlier?

It is really nice to see that you have so much pride in your NDSM's and your past as gun bunny support but I am really not super impressed with your write-ups or attitude. I too have done Bosnia and Kosovo as well as two tours in Iraq and am walking out the door to Afgan in three weeks. I woud never, ever talk to any the way you did or throw my service in thier face. What the hell have you done lately?

I slammed a boot in about 15 seconds, then puked my guts out. Needless to say, I never did it again.

I really don't give a rats ass about what you think of my attitude. It's my attitude so get over yourself.

Until you give 36+ years of your life in service to this country I don't want to hear it.

Now, go and keep your head down.

Hopefully this crap with North Korea deescalates or we might all end up making rice wine in fallout shelters...there's no way they're getting my bacon...

I don't think Soju and bacon are compatable...;)

If they do cross the border it's probably not an attack as much as someone's pushing them from behind or they're looking for a meal and electricity (reference the satellite image of the globe at night...S. Koreas is lit up like a Christmas tree and N. Korea has no lights)...:D

You give fourteen on active duty during wartime and I will give start to think you have something to say. I am having a huge problem right now with troops with a deployment behind thier back now that think they are owed something by others that have not served. We chose to live this life for a reason, if yours was to have something to hold over someone else's head I feel really bad for you.

My service was voluntary also. I joined during the draft at 17 and stayed until 25. I was years away from having to do anything, but I did it anyway. Eventhough I was in during Nam and they didn't send me is not my fault...it's the luck of the draw. Apparently, that didn't stop people in CA and NY from spitting at me and calling me a "baby killer". But that didn't deter me.

Just for ****s and giggles, where were you when I was active during 1972-1980? My service time ended on 3 Jun 2010. 1972-2010 was my time. Now it's your time. And when you leave service it'll be someone else's time. After that "this time" will be your glory days.

I am not holding anything over anyone's head. Life's too short for BS. ;)

I didn't mean to take this too far. However, it was fun. For those are over in the big sandbox, be careful and be confident in every action and you'll be fine.

My comments were simply that nothing not even 36+ years of service to your country gives anyone the right to act like they are above anyone else with they served their country or not. (Again just my opinion)

Bacon is good.

Beer is better.

Life is rough.

So work hard and play harder.

Semper Fi.

I just like to hear stories from the old timers (no offense). It's always crazy to see how bad things were and how things are still similar. You're not really that old but there's a lot of life experience there. If you're interested in even older experiences...Band of Brothers is a great series if any of you haven't seen it. I want to see The Pacific but haven't (no HBO) and won't rent it because I want to buy it as a box set. If you can, check it out too.

I just got back from the grocery store, and you know how they have those summer grilling guides, BBQ cookbook magazines, etc in the checkout lane? They had a bacon cookbook hahaha...

That's A way. Was thinking of hanging some bacon inside the keg for a few days in a bag with non-flavored dental floss.. I think baking it in the oven for a while then squeezing the hell out of it with a papertowl until the fat is drained off would be a good start. I just was wondering if anyone else has a better way.
