I'm new at this and thought I'd take the dive and switch from bottling to kegging. I ordered a couple of "used" corny kegs. One came with what I assumed was a "standard" lid and the other with a racetrack lid. I replaced ALL of the seals including the ones I found inside of the posts. One of the lids had a relief valve which was stuck in the closed position (can't pull it open and can't remove it). No leaking everything great. But. . . I wanted to replace the lid with the defective relief valve and ordered a "standard" replacement. Guess what? It doesn't fit. My keg seems to be some weird size that is not a standard or a racetrack, but some mixed version. Just for fun, I've included links to pictures for you to enjoy. If you recognize what it is and know where I might find a replacement with a relief valve, give me a shout!

What I thought was a "standard" opening:

What is the brand and model of the problem keg? My initial thoughts were it looked like a normal shape to me, but there are odd rare specialty kegs out there. I would try spraying that valve with wd-40 and use a small pipe wrench to try and free it, that way you can use the lid that fits the keg. From your other pictures the new lid looks a bit too round, but it could just be the camera angle. The new lid looks like it has a weld-less relief valve. If you got the other lid going you could always drill a hole on your racetrack lid and put the valve on that one. Or as a last resort you could always just drill out another on that problem lid. I really think with some spray lubricant and a pipe wrench to get a good non-slip grip, you should be able to back that old valve out of the threads. Unless some jack@ss used glue or something, in which case a little heat may help. Either way please let us know what brand and model the keg is, it helps when other people search when having the same problem.

Well, looking at the keg it has "MFG by John Wood Co. St Paul MINN A67" near the bottom. At the top it has "Kist Bottling Co, Fall River MA Premium Model Liquid Carbonic. Division of General Dynamics 307930" Don't know if that helps. I can't find any other markings. I sent the lid to Kegconnection in Texas to see if they can either find another with a working release valve or drill out and replace the release valve on the original lid. I have a feeling that these things are going the way of the dinosaur and that only "new" kegs will be available soon.

I have one of those racetrack lids for my 10 gallon. I mean, it's identical down to the curved feet. But mine is a Cornelius.

Holy Brewmaster! That's quite a setup you have.

The lid that I'm looking at is not a "conventional" racetrack. This is the bottom of a racetrack that I have: http://www.flickr.com/photos/wally_dad/12758116125/

The weird hybrid lid does not have the straight sides of the racetrack lid, but it is more oval than a standard lid. Take a look at it here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/wally_dad/12758255793/

It's a mystery!:drunk:

Thanks for the compliment.

Here is what I have on my 10 gallon corny. Looks very much like the link I posted above and the lid you have.

Looks similar, but I ordered the racetrack lid you have linked to. It doesn't fit. It's easier to distinguish them if you look at the bottom. If there are any straight edges, which I think you will see on your 10 gal. example, it's not the same lid I am trying to identify. Keg Connection modified mine by drilling out the bad valve and replacing it with a new one. Should be in the mail and on its way home now. Still, I'd like to figure out exactly what I have in case someone else runs into one.

Cheers!:mug:
