Well!! I brewed my first batch today and lets say that after carefully considering the exceptional Acronym list provided on this site you forgot one. Cluster f*$k!!! My fellow ex-miltary buds will know this. I purchased all my shtuff from Midwest(very good service, by the way) and a Autumn ale extract kit. The brew part went well except my kitchen looked like the wrong end of a bomb expolsion. I steeped, boiled, added and chilled per the instructions, all was well, until.....I added the wort and the water to the fermenter, pushed the airlock in and the rubber grommet fell into the fermenter!!! Argh!! I decided instead of digging around the wort and contaminating my very hopeful future beer, I jammed the airlock in the hole and will hope for the best!!!

Thank you all for a great website and enjoyable reading!! To all of those who recommended John Palmers book "How to Brew" i would also like to thank, fantastic and almost scary fantastic!!

Here's to you guys/gals I will enjoy a Bell's Oberon in celebration or sadness, whichever. Now I get to add the cool signature block.

Congrats on your first brew! I dont have enough expirence to tell you how the rubber grommet will affect the beer, but I hope it works out for ya. If you sanitized the bucket lid and the grommet, I am sure it will be fine.

Be patient when waiting for the fermentation to start, I was way to anxious about it. It took just over 48 hours for it to start, but it hasnt stopped since. What are you brewing next????

Congrats on your first step into this journey of madness! Your grommet should have no ill effect, good choice not to dig it out, if needed you can throw a couple of wraps of tape on the airlock stem to get a tight fit without the grommet.

I haven't thought that far ahead yet, was just hoping to get through the brew day. I am a huge very hoppy IPA fan, so maybe that.

I was so freaked out about sanitizing!! I sanitized everything i could. If it doesn't turn out, there always the next batch and thank God I live close to a good microbrew. :rockin:

Have you ever tried a Stone Ruination IPA? Its a great beer and very hoppy. AHB has a clone kit that I want to try. I already have an IPA in primary, so I will have to wait a while for that. You might want to consider it.

I bet 98 percent of us have pushed a grommet or stopper into their fermenter. Wait until you have to get a stopper out of a carboy...

Congrats! I did the exact same thing. As Rich pointed out, it's happened to all of us. Now I put the airlock into the grommet before I put the lid on the bucket. Live and learn.

Oh, and it will have no effect whatsoever on your beer. When it happened to me, I just went ahead and shoved the airlock all the way down into the hole anyways. It still worked just fine!

Outstanding!!! I'm glad I fell into the majority on my first attempt. Thanks for the response beer brewing buds!! I was worried a little. This is truly a great site. In the future I will put the airlock on prior to the lid!!!:cross:

I think 98% is a little low

I actually spread sanitizer on my arm and fished the grommit out... and my beer survived. Hindsight says it would have been better to leave it.
